German Athletics Nationals U18/U23 2024 – Day 2 Field Events (6th July 2024)

After I had a combined report of all events of the first day 2024 German Under 18 / Under 23 Athletics Nationals I cover the remaining two days split by field and track events. This posting is about the field events held in Mönchengladbach on 6th July 2024. I will be a bit less detailed in the reports what has happened – the pictures are in rather chronological order.,

This posting comes with 602 major size pictures in a dedicated event section of the sports gallery.

German Athletics Nationals U18/U23 2024 – Day 2 Field Events

The first field events of the national competition were the women under 18 hammer throw and the men under 18 high jump. However, after the Borussia Mönchengladbach green keepers already were very intensively trying to repair the lawn after each shot put round on the first day, the hammer throw was scheduled to be held in a stadium nearby. With my outfield photo accreditation, I did not go there and covered the event. Thus, my initial key focus was on the high jump and especially the female under 18 triple jump. In a close battle with Berenike Roos (TV Wattenscheid 01, 12.63m), Lotta Edzards (SCC Berlin) won the triple jump event with 12.70 meters. Both athletes had their best attempt in the last jump, after Edzards lead by just one centimeter before. Three high jumpers passed the bar at 2.06 meters, with Theo Hellwig (Schweriner SC) having the least attempts and becoming German champion.

The young ladies had their competitions in the pole vault. Anna Hiesinger (LAZ Ludwigsburg) won the under 18 competition with 4.00 meters. WGL Schwäbisch Hall’s Tamineh Steinmeyer became Under 23 Champion in that discipline, being the only athlete jumping 4.10 meters.  The conditions to cover javelin throw were limited with the outfield west, so that I just had a look to the Under 18 men. Moritz Schönherr (SC Potsdam, 70.69m) beat Anton Steffen (1. LAV Rostock) in a 17 contestants contest by just 14 centimeters.

Triple Jump and Javelin Throw Towards the End of the Day

In the male triple jump, Benedikt Maurer (SV Germering, Under 18, 14.89m) and  Steven Freund (LAC Erdgas Chemnitz, Under 23, 15.92m) finally made their way to the medal ceremonies for gold. The last competition in the sand pit was the under 23 women triple jump. Sarah-Michelle Kudla (SCC Berlin) left quite a gap to Grace Monono (LG Nord Berlin), winning with 13.40 meters. Any other of her valid attempts would have been sufficient for gold as well. The under 23 javelin throw events made Mirja Lukas (58.70m) and Max Dehning (77.72m, both Bayer Leverkusen) new German champions. The latter just had valid attempts in the first two throws and retired after his fourth one.
