Luke Combs – This One’s For You – The Record-Breaking Album

Usually, I am reviewing albums at the time of release. Luke Combs This One’s For You has been released on 2nd June 2017. This album broke several records. As the new Old Dominion album stormed to the top of the US Country album charts, This One’s For You is tied with Shania Twain’s Come On Over as the the longest running No.1 album in the history of the US Billboard Country Music Album charts. Last week, it already tied with Shania Twain’s Come On Over. Funnily, this record-breaker happens in the week when Luke Combs is already releasing his second album, What You See is What You Get. As this is a special album review, I also deviate from my usual format and use a more classic way to review the album – you know the key songs anyway.

About Luke Combs and The Record

Luke Combs was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1990. Already while being in school, he was singing and started to do own music in college. Hurricane was one of the first songs he published on one of his first two self-produced EPs. and became an iTunes hit. He signed with Columbia and produced an EP called This One’s For You, which made it to the country album charts. Hurricane was re-released in 2016 and became Luke Combs first Country Airplay charts topper.

Record-Breaking This One’s For You

The album This One’s for you was released on 27th November 2015. In mid-2018, the album was re-released as This One’s For You Too in a deluxe version. In August 2019, the album spent its 44th week on the top of the Billboard Country Album Charts and thereby broke the record for a male artist album, which was held by Randy Travis’ Always and Forever. With the charts released on 26th November 2019, he tied the overall record holder, Come On Over by Shania Twain, by making the 50th week on the golden spot. By the charts released dated on 9th November 2019, Luke Combs could have been the sole record holder – but Old Dominion said “no”. With the new Miranda Lambert album being released later and the new Luke Combs long-player to be released very soon, it is hard to predict if This One’s for you can go back one day and leave Shania behind.  Funnily, Comb’s new album What You See Is What You Get has already produced two Top 10 hits in the US Country Singles Charts – Beer Never Broke My Heart is one of them.

Luke Combs will be one of the C2C Headliners in 2020.

Luke Combs – This One’s For You (Too)

The original edition of the album featured 12 songs and lasted 43 minutes. The This One’s For You Too edition adds five songs and roughly 16 minutes. These tracks are just added to the end of the tracklist, so that the first twelve songs are equivalent in both editions. The album produced five singles, which all topped the US Country Airplay charts. None of these songs was placed worse than third place in the US Country Single charts.

The most prominent songs are of course the five singles taken from the album. Hurricane is likely the most well-known – and it also sold the most units as a single. However, two other songs, When It Rains It Pours and Beautiful Crazy, topped the Singles Charts as well as the Singles Airplay Charts. Hurricane also “just” was second in the Canadian Country charts, in contrast to the other singles, including One Number Away and She Got The Best of Me.

But there are thirteen additional songs to listen to – and they just form the quality of Combs’ debut album. There are hidden party hits like Beer Can, slower and classic sounds like Houston, We Got A Problem or tracks like A Long Way, where you just ask yourself why these ones did not make it as a single. The album is compact (even in the deluxe edition) and just does not get boring.

The Best Album Ever?

If an album hits a record like this, you just have to discuss whether it is the best album of the world – or one of the best ones. My answer is that this is definitely not the case. This One’s For You is definitely a very good one, but there are a lot of factors, which “ease” this kind of records nowadays. First of all, the album charts is not a pure sales charts (Luke Comb’s one does not lead the album sales since quite a time), but it also includes the downloads and airplay of single songs. Secondly, the demand for album sales is very low in the US. While Luke Combs sold some more than 500,000 units of the album for the record (which is double platinum in the US), Shania Twain sold over 15 million units in the US only. But still, of course, the performance of the album is amazing.
