Welcome back (somehow), Bones Owens. My review of his 2025 album Best Western is already the third time I am having a deeper listen to a record of the US-American artist. The album has been released on 19th September 2025.

Bones Owens – About The Artist

Bones Owens is a US-American blues rock and country rock artist. The Missouri-native started releasing music in 2014 already, when he published his EP Hurt No One. After another EP, his self-titled album Bones Owens is regarded being his debut album.  In 2024, he published his sophomore record Love Out Of Lemons.

Bones Owens – Best Western – Track by Track

The fifteen song album lasts 51 minutes.

1. Before I’m in the Grave

Before I’m in the Grave – at least the title suggest that the album kicks off with a song I can perfectly relate to. The song is like a “To do” list for things one has to do before… You know, the call button in heaven has been pressed. Sometimes it is as basic as Leave my mark upon this earth before I’m in the grave. There are also more challenging tasks like I’ll right the wrongs I’ve done. Overall, the song is a nice Americana rocker with an alternative touch.

2. Come Down to It

While the opener had a melancholic and emotional touch, this one is really energetic. I immediately thinking of having a motorcycle road trip in the Mid-West (even though I don’t have a license for that…). Come Down to it is a fun track, I really like it.

3. In the Wind

The first three songs Bones Owens presents on Best Western all come with very different characters. In the Wind is a cool, laid back song, which mixes country and blues rock elements – at least until the chorus. At that point, the US-American artist clearly goes for his rocking heart.

4. Old Time Low

There are also some already featured songs on the album. Precisely, Bones Owens has shared three of the fifteen songs before the album – Old Time Low is one of them. The song feels very harmonic and melodic – even though it has the Easy Rider spirit of Come Down to It as well.

5. Sunday Fix

On a Sunday morning, after a hard night at the saloon, the cowboy is riding the horse very slowly. That’s not the topic of Sunday Fix, but the slow Western-style melody of the song somehow raises that picture in my mind. You could also call the song a country ballad with a special touch. I like it.

I need your lovin’
Like a Sunday fix
I’m drinking spirits
Praying this ain’t it
I’m on a heater
Don’t know when to quit
Said awww

6. Pay No Mind

Pay No Mind is breaking the series of three previously released songs. The 3:33 minute song comes with a rather steadily meandering melody (one could also say it is monotonous). The song comes with a nice storytelling, though.

7. Best Western (feat. Yelawolf)

For the title track of the album, Bones Owens teams up with Alabama origin rapper Yelawolf. I feel that the song has a very intense, mysterious atmosphere, which is somehow interrupted by the rap part in my point of view.

8. Silver Spoon Blues

Eight songs still to go, all of them are new to Bones Owens listeners. The artist really delivers a great service to his fans with this album. Silver Spoon Blues combines blues and rock elements with a rough, distorted indie style.

9. Talkin’ Loud

No need to relax or play it slowly – Talkin’ Loud kicks off with full guitar power. Bones Owens goes for a lovely, stomping Southern rock track with the typical ingredients. The chorus is easy to sing along and has a lot of rock party potential, the bridge presents even more elaborate guitar themes. Another really nice track.

10. My Baby’s Gone

9 o’clock
And this city turns my head around
Trying to look for someone
I know won’t be found
And I wanna see her
Never wanna leave her
But I just can’t reach her

After the predecessor already gave the right mood for a Southern rocking party, My Baby’s Gone keeps up that spirit. The title might rather suggest a slower, melancholic song, but it is simply great fun.

11. Radiator Soup

Best Western continues with a straight rock’n’roll track. The track has a really nice rock power and continues with the nice Western style and enjoyable sound of the songs before. By the way, the lyrics neither feature the word radiator nor elaborate on any kind of food. The 2:39 minutes song is rather short, but it defintiely leaves a mark.

12. Demolition

After Radiator Song, the second shortest track of the album, Bones Owens presents the longest song of Best Western. The main groove of Demolition steadily runs in the background, while Owens presents the song in his typical way – a nice Americana swag with a unique, rough, rural sound. Despite the long duration of the song, the lyrics as such are not that long and complex, though.

I don’t really wanna listen
To your mission
I don’t really wanna give in
To your bullshit
Demolition
No more

13. Here is Not My Home

Here’s not my home
I’s made to roam for truth
Heart like a stone
Rollin alone for you

After this massive, rocking sound of DemolitionHere is Not My Home feels comparably fine. The guitars are gently strumming in the background, the vocal part has a certain level of ease.

14. Don’t Nobody Wanna Be Alone

In the penultimate track, Bones Owens asks Don’t Nobody Wanna Be Alone. The song feels very personal, also expressing quite some personal struggle. For example, Owens states Well I tried counting sheep, but there’s wolves underneath. After 13 songs in being in the books already, this one still delivers a different and new touch.

15. Time Bomb

With the rhythmic Time Bomb, the album takes a nice rocking finale. The song does not have that strong Americana vibes, so that it also leads to a somehow special sound

Bones Owens – Best Western – My View

Blues, country, rock, personal stories and good vibes – there is a lot to be explored while listening to Best Western. With twelve unreleased songs and a nice range of tracks, Bones Owens definitely provides good service to the home listener. I feel that this album easily deserves the Top Pick! award.
