DJK Holzbüttgen – SSF Dragons Bonn 4-7 (1-3, 0-3, 3-1)

As I did not manage to get into an athletics event in Dusseldorf in parallel, 24th January 2026 gave me a really interesting experience in the German Floorball Bundesliga. The Rheinland derby was scheduled, with DJK Holzbüttgen hosting SSF Dragons Bonn. A fan bus from Bonn and the enthusiastic Holzbüttgen crowd made me expect a fired up match of two ambitious teams. The play-offs were coming closer, so that three point from that battle might have been more valuable than the emotional boost of controlling the rival over 60 minutes. Here is my match report.

Dragons Bonn – SC Potsdam – Match Report

Even though some felt being a bit of late, a total of 476 spectators saw this Saturday evening match. The home fans cheered first due to Jarno Pensikkala. After a nervous beginning by both teams, the Holzbüttgen forward completed a left-wing fast break after just 94 seconds. The match stayed very dynamic, both teams had some decent chances. It took until the 10th minute, though, until there was the next goal. This time, the guest support section cheered louder, as Florian Weißkirchen tied the score with a shot to the near post. Briefly thereafter, the ball roll into Jan Saurbier again – but the referees declined that potential goal.

However, Bonn took more control now and also was a bit of luckier. Adrian Stein turned the momentum in favor of the Dragons in the 12th minute. The German national team striker was in great sniping position after Bonn had won the offensive face-off. The match had now quite a bit of the derby and rivalry atmosphere which you hoped for. Some critical situations also heated up the emotions in both teams. After a turnover in the 19th minute, Bonn quickly brought Felix Künnecke into scoring position and increased their lead to two goals. 1-3 was also the intermediate score, maybe a bit of unlucky from a Holzbüttgen perspective, but Bonn felt being the more effective team in this first period.

Disappointing Second Period for the Home Crowd

The much the first period of this game was a great Bundesliga battle, the second one felt slightly disappointing from a neutral perspective. Holzbüttgen felt to lack spirit and did not manage to keep the derby fire burning at their own Stadtparkhalle. Maybe it was also because of two early goals the emotions were fading. Even a missed penalty shot by Aaron Niketta in the first minutes did not lead to an energetic push. Therefor, Topias Ruisla added the fourth goal for Bonn in the 24th minute. Saurbier had no chance against his precise snipe. Just some two minutes later, Adrian Stein scored his second goal of the day. He profited from another fast attack by his team, which just could not be stopped by the DJK.

Even though there were no more goals for quite a while, the match just did not feel like there could be a Holzbüttgen comeback. SSF Dragons Bonn majorly controlled the match, the scattered attacks by the host could not scare Kristaps Novikovs and his defenders sufficiently. DJK Holzbüttgen likely had their best chance to reduce Bonn’s lead late in the second period, when Stein had to go to the sin bin (incorrect hit, 36th). Finally, the power play did not lead to too difficult challenges for Bonn’s box play. On top of that, Bonn felt to have the sharper knifes in their portfolio. One of them is definitely Weißkirchen. 26 seconds after Stein was back from the penalty bench, he added his second goal. There was no defender in a wide range around the top scorer. This gave Holzbüttgen a five goal handicap for the last twenty minutes.

It’s Hot Again at Stadtparkhalle

Whatever DJK Holzbüttgen does in the locker room during an intermission, they did much better in the second one. The power, the spirit, the energy you felt in the first period (and missed in the second one) was back from the very beginning of the third period. And they deservedly converted that into score quickly. In the 44th minute, their hopes raised with two goals within twenty seconds. Pensikkala scored the first one after a nice free hit gameplay. Leo Häfner completed the left wing attack thereafter and gave back hope to the hosts. Just three goals difference now and some 16 minutes left to play was definitely doable.

The match heated up now, including some verbal and physical intensity. Apart from Dennis Schiffer, who had to stay on the bench after a second period incident, there were no serious issues, though. Bonn tried to calm down the match in which Holzbüttgen was pushing more and more. When Lucas Grünewald had to take another bench penalty in the 52nd minute, the DJK had a great opportunity to close up. Even though that power play looked much better than the one before, Bonn’s defense survived this situation. With four minutes left to go, the hosts pulled Saurbier the first time. And indeed, Moritz Neustadt scored in this field player advantage with a 2:43 minutes left on the clock. However, the Bonn lead was too comfortable. While Holzbüttgen could not add any more goal, Jan Zwak did the empty net goal in the final minute, making Bonn winning this interesting match.

Dragons Bonn – SC Potsdam – My View of the Match

If only there wasn’t the second period in this match. A characteristic situation was about one minute before the end of that period. The entire board on the long side of the field crashed down after a fight for the ball. It took five, six seconds before anybody cared. Ball kids, club staff or maybe even spectators. These twenty minutes were a bad time for DJK Holzbüttgen – and finally decided the match. The first and third period majorly showed stunning, fast, thrilling and emotional floorball – just exactly what you hope for when you visit the Rheinland derby. A great evening at Kaarst / Holzbüttgen, which is overall one of Germany’s premier locations for Floorball Bundesliga matchdays.
