Looking Back To… Willie Nelson & Family (29th August 2026, Bethel Woods NY)

There are concerts which do deserve a weekend trip overseas. While I typically do these kind of things for Weird Al Yankovic shows, my trip in late August 2026 felt even bigger than that. Willie Nelson & Family headlined the Outlaw Music Festival Tour. On 29th August, it had its second last tour stop at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in New York State. Music lovers know that this is the ground at which the legendary Woodstock Festival took place in 1969. So far I had just seen the lovely museum there. The lineup was amazing, so that I split my report in three party. The first one deals with Willie Nelson & Family only.

This is a Looking back to… post, for which I was an ordinary spectator using my point and shoot camera for pictures. Thus, and also due to my seat on the left wing side, the picture quality does not match my usual concert report one.

 

Willie Nelson & Family – About The Artist

A compressed bio as I put it into my concert report feels too limited for legendary Willie Nelson. He was born on 29th April 1933 in Abbott, Texas, i.e. he was 93 years old at this performance. Nelson was married four times and has eight children in total. He is still releasing albums regularly. Dream Chaser, his latest release published in May 2026, is his 79th solo studio album overall. Including all collaborations, he released over 100 ones. He is a 15 times Grammy Award and a ten times CMA Award winner.

Apart from his band, two of his sons, Lukas and Nelson shared the stage with their father Willie. Lukas is also an internationally very well reputed artist. In music business, Micah is typically using the artist name Particle Kid.

 

Looking back to… Willie Nelson & Family at Bethel Woods

The Nelsons’ set was the last one of the day, taking some 70 minutes. Before the show, the stage was covered with a curtain. When it was lowered, the family and band members already sat at their chairs, performing Whiskey River and Stay a Little Longer as the first songs. The focus was on Willie’s songbook, but especially Particle Kid’s songs were in focus as well. For example, the fifth song was Die When I’m High (Halfway to Heaven), a song Micah wrote in Willie Nelson style. Towards the middle of the set, songs like On the Road Again and You Were Always on My Mind were some highlights of the evening. Unfortunately, quite a lot of people left early.

The last songs of the ordinary set were We Don’t Run and Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die. Thereafter, all the other artists of the evening like Stephen Wilson Jr., Sheryl Crow, the Avett Brothers, and their band members joined the family for Will the Circle Be Unbroken? and I’ll Fly Away. Thereafter, the ensemble and Willie walked off the stage while the other band members played a fade-out. What a fantastic experience to see this legend on stage, who still feels surprisingly active. That week showed that also legends physically leave us one day – but Willie just not feels to be ready for that.
