  • Lovely singer-songwriter country tracks
  • Great storytelling

While I already had some album reviews completed for the weeks thereafter, Easter weekend 2025 was a bit of thin in regards of album promotions. The more I was happy to run into the album Now What I Do by US-American artist Laura Sawosko. Regarding the press kit, the Americana / country singer-songwriter released her sixth studio album on 18th April 2025 (I just found four predecessors on Spotify). Here is my review.

Laura Sawosko – About The Artist

Laura Sawosko is a US-American artist, who was born on 23rd December 1976. She is originally from Palos Hills, Illinois, in the outskirts of Chicago and moved to Arizona to study Broadcasting and Music Composition at Arizona State University. She originally worked as a composer, doing the original score for some movies like An Intimate Friendship (2000). During that time, she was also playing in a band, Surrender Dorothy. During her Arizona times, she also released three solo albums, Piecing It Together (2003), Me, Myself And You (2005) and Laura Sawosko (2007).

In 2010, she moved to Nashville to pursue a songwriting career. In 2019, she released the album The Songwriters, which is the most recent album release I found of her.

Laura Sawosko – Not What I Do – Track by Track

The twelve song album lasts 42 minute. A couple of songs have been shared on YouTube, but not on streaming platforms beforehand.

1. You Just Being You

The first three minutes of Now What I Do are dedicated to You Just Being You. The song opens with the violin, which is is a key melodic element throughout the song. Despite some drums and other instruments in the background, the song makes me feel it could be a lovely one in a songwriters’ round. It spreads so much personal, intimate feeling.

2. Biscuits and Gravy

While the opener is rather slow and gentle, Biscuits and Gravy has a much more rhythmic and energetic style. The song has a very nice, straight storytelling, which turns it into a very enjoyable listen.

3. Rhinestones For Pearls

The ballad-style Rhinestones For Pearls is a song about Nashville. It criticizes how the city is transforming and thereby also loosing its spirit. This one really impressed me – it is a gem of songwriting.

4. Your Little Wings

The musical style of Your Little Wings rather reminds of Biscuits And Gravy. The song is encouraging a young girl to follow your truth and, darling, you just be you. Laura Sawosko’s songs might not come with a bang, loud guitar riffs and modern sound elements – but she impresses with her lovely stories.

5. Home

It’s a place where everybody knows your name – that’s how Laura Sawosko is describing Home in the fifth song of her 2025 album. The track is a typical country music song about feeling safe at home, childhood memories and if you’ve got a question – that’s what the bible’s for. I am sure that many listeners can relate to these words. No, it ain’t for everyone – but for me it’s home. Lovely one.

6. College Days

Looking back at the artist’s life continues with College Days. The song is special, as the backing instrumentation is very limited and thus has a very strong focus on the vocals. Again, Now What I Do is beautiful in telling its story and thereby also feels encouraging to go your way – even if has some bad decisions as well.

7. Not What I Do

It’s three chords and the – painful – truth – that’s how Sawosko is describing her life in the title track of the album. The song describes the struggle of being an artist. It’s sleepless nights and it’s paying your dues. On the other hand, it’s the love of my life which I didn’t choose. She states music is who I am, not what I do at the end of the chorus. This very personal write is a lovely listen.

8. Take My Hand

The personal stories of Now What I Do continue in Take My Hand. Laura is praising her father, the strongest man I ever met. Despite her father has died, I’ll always be his little girl. She is beautifully describing memories and all she learned from him in a beautiful guitar and fiddle atmospheric song.

9. More Than Just A Burger

More Than Just A Burger reminds of Laura’s childhood days. It is full of memories and lovely reminders of happy days and growing up with her brother. It thus nicely connects to Take My Hand. With almost five minutes duration, the song is the longest listen on Not What I Do.

10.This Much

I had so many questions left unanswered, I had so much I couldn’t wait to say. This song is about the pain and feeling of somebody passing away. This Much is also full of struggle and pain and thus again leads to a very intimate and touching feeling. You feel with Laura while listening to these tunes.

11. I Want To Do This Right

The song is dedicated to the love of a mother to her daughter. I want To Do This Right is a clear message send by another lovely written, gentle song. You simply listen and enjoy the lovely write by this artist.

12. Not Your Reason

While most songs on Now What I Do are driven by the guitar, Laura Sawosko closes the album with a piano song. The song is about struggle in a relationship. When will you see me and I am not the hate in you, the lyrics are telling. A beautiful and touching finale of this lovely record.

Laura Sawosko – Not What I Do – My View

If I look at the Spotify stats of Laura Sawosko, there is hardly any song which gives you a number of streams. That means that the numbers are really low and not displayed. What a big shame – the music she is presenting on Not What I Do is lovely. Very intimate, extremely well-told singer-songwriter tracks with deep messages. That’s what good music is made of. I really loved running into this release.
