TuS Ferndorf – TV Emsdetten 31-26 (15-16)

4th September 2026 featured the kick-off of the second matchday of the 2nd Handball Bundesliga (Men), 2026/27 season. After I had been to their home match vs. Ludwigshafen the season before, I was looking forward to be back at TuS Ferndorf. On that evening at their amazing Sporthalle Stählerwiese arena, the Siegerland team hosted TV Emsdetten, a town located North of Münster. Both teams had won their season openers quite clearly, so that another victory would somehow make them settle in the upper parts of the table.

The match had to start some 30 minutes later than scheduled, at 19:30, Emsdetten was held up by a motorway closure due to an unstable crane. However, their fans were at the packed venue way before their team (likely, because they could go for a detour early).

TuS Ferndorf – TV Emsdetten – Match Report

Both teams needed a couple of minutes to get into the game. The first four minutes just had one goal per team and you did not feel that the guests suffered from the limited warm-up they had. Soon thereafter, Ferndorf managed to gain a two goal lead and kept that distance until the 13th minute. Each team had periods in which they struggled in office. This time, it was on the hosts’s side. For the first time in the match, Emsdetten took the lead by a Marius Kluwe goal in the 16th minute. The Münsterland team, which recently promoted to 2nd Bundesliga felt to have more variable game and also profited from Yannick Terhaer’s strength from the 7 meter line (6/6). On the other hand, most of the time, Ferndorf felt more clever and experienced.

However, the Siegerland hosts did struggle now. Emsdetten lead by three goals a couple of times. Driven by the loud crowd in the compact, packed venue, Ferndorf never gave up. Definitely, it is worth mentioning that they tied the score a couple of time, but never gained back the lead  in the entire first half. Right with the intermission siren, Terhaer converted a penalty throw, leading to a narrow 16-15 lead.

 

Ferndorf drives the Stählerwiese crazy

The second period started hectically, with a couple of rather quickly performed attacks on either side. The man of the match in the second half was definitely one member of the court crew, who felt to run more than some of the players, just for drying slippery spots on the floor. The situation became also more slippery for the guests. From a back position, Pablo Lange scored in the 32nd minute and gave back his team the lead. The match was closed, with a close score for the following minutes.

The match turned into a stunning forth and back. With ten minutes left to play, the teams were still tied, 24-24, after a low scoring period. Thus, the fans were already expecting a thrilling match until the very end. However, Emsdetten had their weakest time towards the end of the match. Maybe it’s been this often-quoted lack of experience in that league, which is new to them. With Marius Mundus’ goal two minutes before the match end latest (29-25), the match was decided. Unfortunately, a red card against Marcel Timm added unnecessary nervosity to the match. Thore Rahmlow scored the last goal of the match in the final minute, giving Ferndorf a five goal victory, 31-26.

 

TuS Ferndorf – TV Emsdetten – My View of the Match

What a great crowd – what a great match. Both teams showed a great fight. Ferndorf was the more stable team and finally took the deserved victory – which looks clearer and more dominant by the score than it actually was. As a promoted team, Emsdetten nonetheless showed a very pleasing performance and will be able to challenge quite a couple of teams in the 2nd Bundesliga.
