Two done, five remaining – after I shared my Looking back to… concert reports of the sets by Willie Nelson & Family and the one by Sheryl Crow already, this posting closes my explicit coverage of the 2026 Outlaw Music Festival in Bethel Woods. Apart from the two acts I was looking forward to the most,, there were five additional acts on stage on this 29th August 2026 in Upstate New York.
This is a Looking back to… post, for which I was an ordinary spectator using my point and shoot camera for pictures. Thus, and also due to my seat on the left wing side, the picture quality does not match my usual concert report one. They are published in Pictured Story size.
Looking back to… Outlaw Music Festival Tour
Here are the remaining artists in chronological order. Exceptionally, I decided to have the bio and my notes about the performance by artist and not separately.
Particle Kid
Particle Kid is the artist name of Jacob Micah Nelson, the youngest son of Micah Nelson. He opened the Festival as a solo artist, doing experimental and psychedelic folk–rock, but later also joined his father as a band member. From 2008 to 2017 Micah Nelson was also a member of the band Insects vs. Robots. He also produced some of his father’s albums.
Particle Kid played a some half an hour set. There was a wide range of songs, which were also driven by his entertaining musicians like bassist Aroyn Day. Here and there, the set became quite experimental.

Don Was and the Pan-Detroit Ensemble
Don Was (civil name. Don Edward Fagenson, born on 13th September 1952 in Detroit) is a US American musician and producer. As a producer, he worked with several music legends, like The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Elton John or Garth Brooks. In 2025, he released Groove in the Face of Adversity with Don Was and the Pan-Detroit Ensemble. The project features several top-notch musician, like singer Steffanie Christi’an, Oscar-winning Luis Resto (keyboard), or trombone player Vincent Chandler, who is a professor for jazz studies.
From a purely musical perspective, Don Was was the absolute highlight of the day. The skilled and energetic musicians won the hearts of the audience early. Just in line with the venue and its history, the majority of the songs performed were taken from the Grateful Dead discography. However, the ensemble gave these songs a very different touch, which lead to a very entertaining catching set. I absolutely loved their performance.

Robert Randolph
Robert Randolph is a pedal steel guitarist born on 8th August 1977 in Irvington, New Jersey. He is typically on stage with his Family Band. As such, they have been nominated for the Grammy Awards six times and won one of them (2026, Preacher Kids, Best Contemporary Blues Album). His music mixes blues and gospel with several other genres, like funk or rock.
After Don Was and his bandmates’ catching show, Randolph had a bit of a hard time. However, the performance of the steel guitar player and his bandmates was excellent. They had references to the location like Foxy Lady, originally by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, as well as originals like Sinner. Again, the festival selected a top notch musician even comparably early on the evening.

Stephen Wilson Jr.
The fourth artist on stage has been the only act I had seen live on stage before. Stephen Wilson Jr. had multiple tours in Europe already. For example, I featured his November 2024 show in my home town, Cologne, Germany. He is a 1979 born country-rock artist from Seymour in Indiana. During youth years, Stephen was a promising amateur boxer. So far, Stephen Wilson Jr. has released one album and two EPs.
Stephen Wilson Jr. simply delivered what you expect from him. There were rocking songs, during which he almost jumped over stage, to Father’s Son and Gary, which were on the emotional side. He also checked out the security when I spent some five to ten minutes at different spots in the audience. Coming back from that, he played right in front of a boy, who had his ninth birthday that day – what a lovely way to treat your fans.

Generally, Stephen Wilson Jr. was very close to the fans. After his last song Year to Be Young 1994, he spend a lot of time at the edge of the stage, doing selfies (from a distance) or signing caps, hats, boots and other items. The birthday boy received a signed setlist of his day as as well as a guitar pick – you just had to love this performance.

The Avett Brothers
Last, but not least, The Avett Brothers were the penultimate act on stage in Bethel Woods on that night. The band lead by Seth and Scott Avett combine folk rock with bluegrass and pop elements. They officially started doing music together in 2000 and have released eleven studio albums so far. They have won the Americana Music Honors & Awards in different categories, including the Lifetime Achievement Award for Performance (2023), five times.
Energetic, crazy – at a high musical level. That’s how I would describe the roughly one hour performance of the brothers and their band. Both, Seth and Scott, had songs on the piano as well, which lead to a lovely atmosphere. They started with We Are Loved. My highlight was Me and Jesus, which was played rather in the middle of the sex. Even though I am not that much into their music, I just cannot deny the catching, high quality set they delivered to Upstate New York.
