After the 2021 album Reckless and the 2023 Psychopaththis review of Obsessed is already the third album I cover from Morgan Wade. The US-American country-pop artist released her new album on 16th August 2024. Here are my thoughts.

Morgan Wade – About The Artist

The now 29 year old Morgan Dealie Wade was born on 10th December 1994 in Floyd, Virginia. She turned into a professional artist in 2018. This was also the year she self-released her debut album Puppets with my Heart. Thereafter, the two albums mentioned above followed. Both, Reckless and Psychopath, made it to the Top 6 of the US Heatseekers Charts. On the singles side, Wade’s biggest success so far was the 2021 single Wilder Days, which received a RIAA golden record. Obsessed is her fourth studio album overall.

Morgan Wade – Obsessed – Track by Track

The fourteen song album lasts 54 minutes.

1. Total Control

I’m tired out here on the road
I’ve spent too many nights on my own
Every way I turn just feels wrong
I’m tired out here on the road

Morgan Wade kicks off her very personal song journey with Total Control. The song is a typical country song with a pop touch. It moves between fatigue and love – or as Wade states Your love has total control over me. The song, which has been one of the feature single releases, definitely opens the album in style.

2. Department Store

You were fifteen when you started drinking alcohol and I wish I could be the to guide you home – Obsessed is full of personal stories. There is no exception about this second song, Department Store. In the situation in which Morgan Wade had to fight cancer and had to go through a mastectomy, she is still thinking about other people as well. And she does that in a beautiful style.

3. Time To Love, Time To Kill

You said you moved on
I said I did, too
The truth is I’m at the starting line
Just waiting on you

The tough times Wade recently had to go through also lead to mental struggle. Time To Love, Time To Kill is one of these songs, which beautifully underlines this dialectic situation. The slower song with country ballad quality nicely supports the mood of the song.

4. Obsessed

The title track of the album is the fourth track of it. The song starts like a slow piano ballad, but more and more speeds up and develops to a rhythmic song about love (Baby, I am so obsessed). A fascinating, atmospheric write, which is coming with a stunning plot.

5. Juliet

Juliet, your lips taste like wine
You’re laying in his bed, but you’re thinking of mine
Romeo ain’t what you need
I think you should run away with me

The Romeo and Juliet topic is handled by Morgan Wade in a very different way in the fifth song of Obsessed. I really like this write, but it comes with so many aspects. On the one hand, there is the strumming guitar with the howling steel guitar in the background, which is driving typical country vibes. The electric guitar adds some rock touch and energy. On top of all that, there is the fine, fragile voice of Morgan Wade. Great song.

6. 2 AM In London

With almost 1.4 million streams, 2AM in London has been the most successful single release of this album on Spotify. It is a very limited, but in that way also very concentrated story. Morgan Wade is talking about her feelings (It’s 2AM in London
and I hate sleeping alone). Her vocal range is as limited as the set of instruments who is supporting her. This leads to a very personal, narrative way of getting into the story of it. And this also turns the track into a very energetic experience.

7. Hansel And Gretel

With this Grimm Brothers reference, there is even a little, small piece of Germany in Morgan Wade’s 2024 Obsessed. The song is about the struggle of a break-up. There is no way to get back to the love which has been once there. The song is rather rhythmic and in the typical contemporary country music range – I like Wade’s storytellig in here a lot.

Like Hansel and Gretel
We put kettle on the level
But we just won’t make it back

8. Spin

Started trying, but I started too late
I’m finally crying
You’ve done walked away
The grass ain’t greener over here, it’s all dead
The people ain’t prettier, they’re all messed up in the head

The break-up topic continues in Spin. The song is a very melancholic country ballad with howling guitars. A song which makes you listen to this lovely artist.

9. Reality

‘Cause I don’t wanna face reality, stay with me – these key lyrics of the song already tell you that the struggle about love and relationship keeps on with Reality. The song is more present and makes use of a wider range of instruments. Nice

10. Walked On Water (feat. Kesha)

Morgan Wade featuring Kesha – what an amazing collaboration rather at the end of the Obsessed album. While the US artist gave us party vibes with songs like Timber or TiK ToK, she is presenting herself in a very different way. The two artists do great collaborating in this piano ballad. The song is definitely one of the highlights of the album.

11. Halloween

Halloween has been the only feature single of the Morgan Wade’s 2024 album, which has been turned into a “full” music video. Individually, the song is a beautiful ballad with a very intense touch. However, lyrics like We were friends, but I wanted more pop up a bit too often on this album.

12. Crossing State Lines

Crossing State Lines is a track somewhere between country and folk music. The song surprises with the by far longest duration of all songs of Obsessed, as it almost lasts seven minutes. This allows for a nice dramatic plot, starting with a slow, a bit of mousy song, which develops to an energetic, intense listen towards its end. In all kinds of aspects, this song is special.

13. Moth To A Flame

Turn down the music
All I wanna hear is you say my name
I gave up the hard stuff
But you sent a fire through my veins
And I wrote all the songs
About the ones that got away
Thank God I could finally write
The song about the one who chose to stay

The last Obsessed song, which has been shared before the album release, is Moth To A Flame. The song is one of the most beautiful piano ballads on the album.

14. Deconstruction

Talked about childhood, my first concussion
Growing up, our deconstruction
Of the things they taught us that we do not believe
I pushed the food around my plate
You take your hand, you touch my face
For the first time in my life, I finally feel seen

Even though the title Deconstruction might suggest that the melancholic style might continue on the album, there is in fact a bit of a positive outlook at the end of it. This is very much appreciated. The closing track has a nice plot, coming with a rather intense part towards its middle.

Morgan Wade – Obsessed – My View

While writing this review, I had to think about quite a lot about Taylor Swift’s latest one, The Tortured Poets DepartmentObsessed is somehow a good album with lovely storytelling and a lot of emotions. On the other hand, I would love to learn more than the stories Morgan Wade is sharing in here. They feel a bit of monotonous. The melodic side also has just a few “distortions”, especially the epic Crossing State Lines. If you don’t bother about it too much, Morgan Wade provides you with an excellent listen. I just cannot go with that.

Favorite Song: Walked on Water
