It’s already four years ago since I reviewed Ann Doka’s album House of Change. On 24th April 2026, the German artist is back with a new album. Here is my review of Red Lines.

Ann Doka – About The Artists

Originally from Greater Frankfurt, Ann Doka is a German female country and country-pop artist. The singer-songwriter, who is driving her own label, is nowadays based in Bremen. In 2017 and 2018, she won the German Rock & Pop Award as Best Country Singer and Best Pop Singer. Her debut album has been the 2012 Never Ending Road. Six years later, she released Lost But FoundRed Lines is her fourth studio album overall.

Ann Doka – Red Lines – Track by Track

The eleven track album lasts 30 minutes

1. Arid Land

Red Lines starts with Arid Land. The press kit states that the song tells of moments when something that once sustained us has become empty. In line with that, the song is not coming with too happy vibes but rather presents stomping drums and massive riffs. A bit of threatening, but also a nice drive, which is defining the song between country, pop and rock.

2. Dancing with Lions

The second track, Dancing with Lions, has in fact been the only track, which Ann Doka shared before the album. The song feels easier and more pop-alike than the opener. The song is about using your own strength – instead of running against the lions, we dance with them, as the German states about her song. Nice.

3. Under Covers

Red Lines becomes more melodic and fluent with Under Covers. The song just has rather limited country music vibes. However, it presents a really nice, timeless feeling chorus. Thus, I absolutely enjoy listening to it.

4. Hunter’s Moon

The night is magic and reveals temptation and energy. Hunter’s Moon is right in line with this message. It is fast, rocking – but also comes with slower and thoughtful moments. The song feels very modern without becoming random. You get into it quickly – and enjoy the three minute listen thereafter.

5. A Break

A Break is one of the shorter tracks of the album. It welcomes the listener with happy vibes. However, the song also warns that life becomes faster and faster. Slowdowns in A Break make you taking these breakpoints you need and adjust the speed of life to the speed of your demands. I really like the sound and plot of this fifth song of the record.

6. Muse

Gotta be my own muse, Ann Doka states in this song. Again, the German artist combines Americana with pop and rock elements and defines her own style. The song is having a repetitive touch. However, it is thus also makes the song stay in your mind easily.

7. On Paper

On Paper presents a rather clear and straight country-rock signature. The song deals with the difference between logically sensible solutions and those which feel to make sense emotionally. To me, the song is one of the core tracks of Red Lines.

8. Let Them

Especially the beginning of Let Them leads to late 1980’s feelings. The country music element in this song is rather subordinate, the song rather ranges in the pop-rock sphere. However, the song strikes with the elements, which define Red Lines already. Ann Doka recorded a set of nicely flowing listens without neglecting a nice storytelling. Maybe, the eighth track is not the most striking one at first sight, but it does have its beauty.

9. Where the Cold Winds Blow

The title already suggests it – the ninth track is about isolating yourself. It also deals with secluding yourself to protect other. Ann Doka even refers to Elsa of the Frozen movies in the press kit. The song has a nice plot and a catching chorus. This overall leads to one of the most impressing songs of the record.

10. Wabi Sabi Heart

At the end of the journey, we find ourselves back on seemingly familiar ground. That’s the first sentence of the press kit about Wabi Sabi Heart. The pop track with strong Americana elements slows down the album towards its end. It’s a very personal, emotional, touching track.

11. New Land

The album fades out with the 71 second New Land, which comes with world music alike tunes, not clearly defined rhythms. It feels like you indeed made it to a New Land after spending these 30 minutes with Ann Doka.

I will add the Spotify widget once the album has been published.

Ann Doka – Red Lines – My View

Red Lines catches and fascinates me. Especially after listening to the entire album, you are impressed by the dramatic plot of the album, the storytelling, the versatility of songs, which still leads to one message. Ann Doka takes you on a musical journey, which feels so wisely composed.
