TSV Bayer Leverkusen – SG 09 Kirchhof 22-29 (14:15)

After a short notice photo pass cancellation at a concert, I had sufficient time for another handball coverage on 6th September 2026. My residence team Bayer Leverkusen had their 2026/27 season 2nd Women Bundesliga home opener. Like their guests, SG Kirchhof from Melsungen near Kassel, they had lost their first game. Thus having a decent start of the season with a victory felt desirable for both contestants.

TSV Bayer Leverkusen – SG 09 Kirchhof – Match Report

At the very beginning of the match, the home opener felt turning into a disaster for the host team. In the first 14 minutes of the match, Bayer Leverkusen acted nervous, ran into steals and also struggled with Kirchhofs starting netminder, Pauline Grimm. On the other side, Kirchhof also had a too easy time with Bayer’s defense, scoring seven goals in the first seven minutes. Still, the guests also acted rather nervous thereafter, so that between that seventh goal and the 14th minute, there were just three goals in total.

 

The Rheinland hosts trailed by five goals now, but found better strategies on both sides, offense and defense. Step by step, they decreased the early match handicap. In the 26th minute, Dana Gruner even reduced the gap to one goal (12-13). However, it has also been a story of the entire match that whenever Bayer closed up to their opponents, they just did not manage to take the lead. Kirchhof raised their buffer to three goals, which melted down to a single goal, 15-14, before the intermission.

 

Nervous Beginning of the Second Period

Both teams struggled a lot at the beginning of the second half. There were just two goals each in the first eleven minutes. One of them, scored by Lara-Sophie Fichtner in the 39th minute, even tied the score (16-16). However, even that did not give Bayer some confidence. After another tie (17-17), they acted too nervous and also were not really lucky. The most characteristic situation was likely in the 53rd minute. Kirchhof was short-handed, after Nora Lundell had been sent off for two minutes. Kirchhof pulled the goalie to play with six field players. Gruner stole the ball close to the own throwing zone. She went for the long throw – but her attempt solely hit the crossbar.

 

Leverkusen did fight, but Kirchhof now felt much more confident and also smarter in their play. There were still slight opportunities to come back for the host team, but their opponents were simply too constant and reliable in their play. Goal by goal, they increased their lead, while Leverkusen struggled with Nicoleta Petre, who kept the goal in that phase of the match. Finally, the scoreboard showed a 22-29 after 60 minutes and Kirchhof started their party about the victory abroad.

 

 

TSV Bayer Leverkusen – SG 09 Kirchhof – My View of the Match

Seven goals difference – this match definitely hurt Bayer Leverkusen. For quite a while, they had an almost levelled match, before they lost faith and luck. Especially the last 15 minutes of the match lead to a significant score for SV 09 Kirchhof. Maybe, the final score was a bit too high, based on the story of the match. But Kirchhof’s victory had been absolutely deserved.
