After the epic girls singles final, the boys went to decide their singles winner in Düren. At the Internationa German Under 14 Tennis Nationals, French wildcard Mario Vukovic challenged South Korean Dongjae Kim. I was really curious, how the level at this match would be.

Int. German U14 Tennis Nationals – Boys Singles Final – Match Report
The match had significantly more speed and power than the girls match before. Both players showed hard shots, the more slender looking French thereby impressed with a really nice touch. However, he was also more mental in his match. This made him stronger in good situations, but also weaker in situations of struggle. Both players struggled at own serve, so that there have been multiple breaks in the first set. Kim was serving for the set at a score of 5-3. Vukovic felt to be able to come back, as he won the first two points. However, the South Korean saved his serve and sealed the first set by 6-3.
The next nine(!) games of the match can be summed up very quickly. The French boy was on fire, while Kim committed too many mistakes. Vukovic bageled his opponent in the second set and already lead 3-0 in the decider, having two break points against Kim’s serve. But somehow, the Asian player survived and gained confidence. He broke Vukovic, tied the score and even had triple break point in the seventh game. The first one just had to be converted, but an easy smash by Kim just sailed behind the baseline. Some mistakes thereafter, Vukovic saved his serve. However, in his next service game, he invited the Korean again to believe in his chances. At 15-40, Kim this time kept calm and took the break this time. After a 0-30, he won the more than two hour match at own serve.

Int. German U14 Tennis Nationals – Boys Singles Final – My View of the Match
This match was another interesting fight of two very different players. Vukovic impressed and got the love of the Düren spectators, but Kim played cooler and finally also managed to come back after a nine game losing streak. Especially at this age, I felt that this is very remarkable and mature. This Saturday in Düren gave the crowd two very interesting singles tennis matches at a remarkably high level.
