Wenzel Nordic Cup: GOG Gudme – THW Kiel 27-31 (18-14)

The third and final tournament day started with the assumed highlight of the Wenzel Nordic Cup 2026. At 13:00 on Sunday, 16th August 2026, GOG from Denmark faced German THW Kiel. For the locals, this was obviously also a clash between their big players, Oli Mittun and Elias Ellefsen a Skipagotu. Despite Kiel missed their first match on Friday, you could somehow see this one as the final of the handball tournament.

This posting comes with a section of 443 major size pictures in a dedicated event section of the sports galleries.

GOG Gudme – THW Kiel – Match Report

If you would use GOG’s Manuel Zehnder Swiss-style German, you could easily describe the beginning of the match as harzig (sluggish). Both teams struggled to score out of game plays, there were quite a lot of penalty shots on both sides. It felt like this rather played into GOG’s hands. The Danish team took the early lead and gave their opponents a hard time. After 16 minutes, there was already a six goal lead, 11-6. It took Kiel too long to get into their game. GOG’s lead was up to six goals during the first half, but Kiel could close up slightly, so that the first half score was 18-14 in favor of their opponent’s.

Wolff, the Skipper, and Kiel’s Second Half Stregnth

However, the second period gave the Faroese crowd a very different game. There were many factors for that. German national team netminder Andreas Wolff gave GOG a hard time and overall just allowed nine goals in the second half. With the Faroese handball superstar Elias Ellefsen a Skipagotu, who just had limited time on court before, the also got a push in offense. Goal by goal, Kiel first tied the score and then went for the lead. Domen Makuc scored the 19-19 goal in the 37th minute from the seven meter line, Kiels first lead happed five minutes later.

After Skipagotu’s goal in the 47th minute, which gave his team the 24-23 lead, GOG trailed the score until the very end. The second half was much better than the first one regarding the plays, Kiel took profit of their superiority and finally won 30-26.
