Wenzel Nordic Cup: THW Kiel – Valur Reykjavik 34-24 (15-16)

Finally, the Germans went on court at the Wenzel Nordic Cup 2026 at Vid Tjarnir. After missing the first matchday due to travel issues, THW Kiel faced Valur Reykjavik on Friday, 14th August 2026. I was really looking forward, also because this was the first time I featured the team from my home country.

THW Kiel – Valur Reykjavik – Match Report

The Germans and their star players – including local hero Elias Ellefsen a Skipagotu – felt being the favorites in here. However, Reykjavik caused a lot of trouble and broke the opposite defensive line more effective at the beginning of the match. They had a two goal lead (3-1) after six minutes. However, the match stayed close, Towards the middle of the first half, Valur felt being in advantage and lead by tree goals, but THW fought it back, step by step, so that the score was back tied (13-13) after 25 minutes. Nonetheless, Valur closed a really interesting first period with a one goal lead, thanks to the buzzer beater by Bjarni í Selvindi.

 

Valur’s Struggle in Offense

The very first minutes of the second period felt to tell a similar story. After 37 minutes, the score was tied, 20-20. However, Valur more and more struggled with the German defense, who relied on netminder Gonzalo Pérez de Vargas instead of first half goalie Andreas Wolff. Even though Kiel was not overwhelmingly effective in offense in the following minutes, Valur had too many turnovers and blocked shots. The difference in goals increased steadily and Kiel lead by four goals (26-22) after fifty minutes.

Thereafter, the Icelandic team lost their faith in defense, so that the final score was much higher than the in fact story of the match. With three seconds left on the clock, Ben Janos Szilagyi even managed to give Kiel a ten goal difference lead in an overall very interesting handball match. Thereafter, both teams (but especially Kiel) had to fulfil another hard task. Both teams very patiently fulfilled the demand for pictures and autographs by the Faroese spectators, especially the younger ones.
