Jackson Dean (3rd May 2025, Cologne)

The weekend after I covered the Swedish Floorball Finals, I was somehow back to Sweden again. Cologne had Swedish artist Ludwig Hart on stage of Die Kantine on Saturday, 3rd May 2025. The focus of the Sound of Nashville show was naturally on the main artist of the day, though. Hart supported Jackson Dean on his On The Back Of My Dreams tour. I had reviewed the corresponding album released in September 2024 and looked forward to Dean’s performance, after he had been part of the 2023 Heart To Heart event in Dusseldorf.

Die Kantine – About The Venue

I have visited the 900 people venue in the North of Cologne multiple times already. In fact, Die Kantine comes with three venues, their main hall, the smaller Yard Club (where I, for example, featured The Deslondes in 2023) and a nice open air space. The latter featured the 2024 Sound of Nashville Open Air. It will also host the festival in 2025 again (see my summer festival preview) and the Dasha show in early July 2025 (see my Tour Date Overview). The last show I featured in the main hall was Carly Pearce in February 2025. It is rather close to the A1 motorway. Parking is a bit of limited, even though it is a commercial area. The public transport connection is comparably fine, though. The stop Wilhelm-Sollmann-Str. is served by trams 12 and 15 as well as bus 122. From there, it is a some five minute walk. The show was sold out.

Jackson Dean – About The Artists

Jackson Dean Nicholson was born on 6th October 2000 in Odenton, Maryland. The US-American country artist became a professional in 2018. Since then, the released two albums. His debut was the 2022 Greenbroke. In my Songs of the Year 2024 posting, Daddy Raised from his On The Back of My Dreams album make it to the fourth spot for country songs.

Ludwig Hart is an Americana rock artist from Sweden. He was born on 27th July 1987 in Örebro, a town some 200km West of Stockholm. Hart is pursuing a music career since 2019. One year later, he released his self-titled debut album. In 2024, he released his third studio album overall, Stay Young.

Jackson Dean – The Show

Ludwig Hart stepped on stage of Die Kantine in time at 20:00. The venue was packed at that time already, when he started with his 2020 song Cowboys. Supported by singer Michaela Holmberg and another guitarist, he showed a nice gig, which lasted some 27 minutes. There were songs like the 2021 Stuck on You as well as songs from his 2024 album. For example, he played Less I Try. Towards the end of his show, he more and more caught the audience. Finally, he got a big applause from Cologne at the end of his set.

Jackson Dean’s Show

Jackson Dean‘s set started at 21:00. He opened with his latest single, Still Ragin’, He also sang songs from earlier stages of his career, like the third song Trailer Park, which is part of his 2022 Greenbroke album. Fearless was another song from this era. He also played some so far unreleased tracks like Be Your Man and Hey Mississippi, a song about his wife. There were also some nice new moments later in the set. For Train, his keyboarder Trevor Shipley played the flute, for example.

A highlight of the show was Heavens To Betsy. Jackson Dean started the track in the beams of the spotlight, before Cologne cheered and clapped with the country artist to the rhythm of the song. They also sang along with him. His regular set close after 65 minutes with songs like Wings and Don’t Come Lookin’. The concert finished with a two song encore.

Jackson Dean – My View

It was the first time I saw Ludwig Hart. I really liked the set of the Swedish artist, who had a nice leverage of a rather private atmosphere and a major stage show. Jackson Dean did deliver just what you expected – a good show on stage. His songs worked out well in Cologne. However, there were too downside: the venue simply felt too packed and too hot. Die Kantine is never really comfortable at a sold-out show (which venue is that?), but it felt more dense and warm than in other occasions I had. On top of that, the sound was not ideal, with very strong bass presence. The building was massively vibrating, especially during the encore. Nonetheless, it was a good evening for country music lovers in Cologne.
