Flyctory.com Cons

  • Steep walk to the Gateshead Metro Station

In order to see one edition of the “Introducing Nashville” show (I have been on Tenerife during the German ones), I traveled to Gateshead on October 17th, 2019. As a Hilton Hotel frequent traveler, I was looking forward to stay at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead, which felt to have good connections to the airport as well as to the legendary Sage music arena, where the concert took place.

Hilton Newcastle Gateshead – Location

The hotel is located right at the South Bank of the River Tyne, across Newcastle center. The Gateshead (Interchange) metro and transport station is nearby. However, this requires to walk up a hill, it is a ten minutes walk. Unfortunately, the hotel is not properly signposted from the Metro station for pedestrians so that you initially may not end up taking the most efficient way from the metro to the hotel. The Gateshead Sage concert hall is in close proximity.

For shopping and dining, you will likely end up taking that uphill walk or grab a taxi. I felt that the walk uphill was quite bothering, especially with luggage after checkout, though the distance is not too far away. There are, however, some restaurants at the Tyne.

Hilton Newcastle Gateshead – Room

I booked a standard Hilton Guestroom for 75 GBP. Breakfast was included in the rate due to my Hilton Gold Membership. At check-in, I was upgraded to a room with river view. The first impression of the room was amazing. The large window front offered an amazing view over the Tyne, Newcastle and the bridges. The room itself had a reasonable size, I overall liked the facilities in there. The mini bar was empty, but running, so that I could cool my drinks and food in there.

The bathroom was very nice too. It came with a bathtub and shower and the ordinary Hilton amenities. There were some cracks etc. on the floor, but the room as well as the bathroom was clean and was absolutely pleasing.

Hilton Newcastle Gateshead – Breakfast / Food

Breakfast is served in the restaurant at the end of the reception area. The same area also features a nice hotel bar. I was given full breakfast as a Hilton Gold Member (in fact, I only receive free continental one).

The breakfast buffet was really lovely. They offered a lovely variety of items. I especially loved their cereal area. but there was also a lot of juices, fruit and other items. The service was efficient. Some special items, e.g. pancakes or Eggs Benedict, require an extra charge.

Hilton Newcastle Gateshead – Service

The reception was very nice at check-in. The concierge service, where I stored my luggage before check-in, was very kind as well. Overall, I was very pleased with the amenities of the hotel. The WiFi worked very well so that I could work very efficiently. Close to the reception, there is a non-smoking balcony which gives a lovely view over the Tyne – one of my favorites in the hotel!

The basement of the hotel features a gym, which is used by externals as well and free for hotel guests. The equipment of the gym looked much better than in comparable hotel gyms – unfortunately, I could not take too many pictures as there were too many people around. Next to the gym is 15 meters swimming pool, which is lovely. The area also features a whirlpool, a sauna and a steam bath. The sauna, though, was out of order during my stay. There was a tumbler for swimwear – a feature which I absolutely love at hotels.

Hilton Newcastle Gateshead – My View

I did not like the way from the Metro to the hotel – but that’s just due to my lack of athleticism and not the hotel’s fault. I just wanted to start with that negative thing because that is the only thing I could complain about on this one night stay. The hotel was great, the value for money was amazing and the staff was really lovely. It was a perfect location for my concert at the Sage and defintiely a good memory. No argue – this stay was a definite Top Pick!
