  • Beautiful songwriting
  • Very focused on a few elements
  • Nice overall plot of five songs

Flyctory.com Cons

  • Step-by-step release strategy

Foy Vance celebrated his 20th anniversary as a musician this year. For his new album If:We, he goes for a special release strategy. It is split in three parts, which are released separately. While fans have to wait until April 2027 for the full listen, here is my review of the first EP of this series. Its release date is 30th October 2026.

Foy Vance – If:We (EP1) – Track by Track

The five track EP lasts 20 minutes

1. Feel The Cold

The EP start with a fine-singer songwriter track with a strong folk music touch. Foy Vance’s characteristic voice is in focus, the instruments give a fine support on the melodic side. I like the percussion and piano work especially. The song is a really nice first step into this set of five songs.

2. Don’t Move

Don’t Move is a slower track, compared to the opener. Therefore, the gentele rhythm and the wider range of notes lead to a harmonic, warm listen. Vance here and there almost seems to whisper the lyrics. However, there are also more angry and energetic moments in this song.

3. Stoke My Fire

Stoke My Fire, Baby! – these are the first words of the third song of If:We (EP1). In this blues-alike song, Vance soon thereafter states when the morning comes, I will not close my eyes, though I’ve not slept for long. This song is definitely one for the romantic time in life. The four minute song is very gentle and harmonic. Love it!

4. Know By Now

The previous song was already a calm and slow listen, but Know By Now even gives you more of that. There is just the piano, a little percussion and soon thereafter the scattered scrumming of the acoustic guitar. The song does gain more energy, especially in its second half. However, all of that happens so slowly and sensitively that you never feel a break. New elements appear and just feel to fit in perfectly into what is already in stock. That’s wonderful songwriting.

5. Concubine

In the final track Concubine, Vance is doing another very fine and fragile lead into the song. His high voice feels vulnerable and melancholic. The song manages to tell its story in this fine, very atmospheric style. Especially the last part of it feels like the perfect fade-out of this EP.

Foy Vance – If:We (EP1) – My View

Wow, that is a very personal, direct, but also fragile EP with a nice story plot. Foy Vance does not need too many ingredients to these songs, but he puts those in in a perfect manner. The five tracks come with beautiful songwriting and nice storytelling. I really enjoyed the listen, also because the set of songs develops from a comparably strong message to a very fine finale.

Favorite Song: Stoke My Fire
