  • Nice locatation
  • Good value for money
  • Nice breakfast

Spark is one of the latest Hilton brands, rather positioned in the budget-friendly hotel group sphere. After I had a few stays at these hotels in the United States already, I was really flattered to see how they would perform in my home country Germany. Two of these Spark hotels are located not too far away from my residence. On the night before a rail journey to Berlin, I had my first domestic night at the Spark by Hilton Essen City Centre.

Spark Essen City Centre- Location

The hotel is located right North of the tracks of Essen Main Station. The walking distance to the main station is about three minutes. That proximity also leads to the nice feature that there are some stores, including a discount grocery store and a drugstore, which are also open on Sundays. From the hotel, it is also just a short walk to Essen’s pedestrian and shopping area. During my visit, the streets in that area had a couple of road works, leading to diversions and one-way traffic. Thus, getting to the parking garage I booked (also for the nights of my rail trip) felt to take ages. The hotel itself does offer parking, though (18 EUR / day at the time of writing).

Having a main station right across the road obviously leads to nice travel connections, even if you are not traveling by car. Essen is having high speed access to most German destinations. There are also trains to the Netherlands and Eurostar connections to Brussels and Paris. Of course, there are regional connections, especially to the Rheinland and Ruhrgebiet region, as well. Essen Main Station is also connected by the regional Underground system.

Spark Essen City Centre – Room

I had one night at the hotel, Thursday to Friday in June 2026. The rate, including all taxes, was 71.26 EUR in a Queen Room. Spark Hotels generally include breakfast. I was quite surprised by the room in a positive sense. It had a really good size and even more space than some of the German Hamptons I have been in. The bed area was very fine and the workdesk had a good size as well. Compared to the typical German Hampton design, there were less power sockets around the desk, which I felt being a bit of bothering. You have a safe in the room, but no fridge or similar amenities. The room also had air condition, which was, however, not as strong and effective as you would have in US hotels, though. The hotel opened in April 2026 – and you still had a bit of that “renovation smell” in the room – I liked that.

The bathroom was absolutely fine as well. The area around the sink had sufficient space for your toiletries, in addition to the amenities given in dispensers. The shower was actually rather large and worked very well. Also the area around the toilet was even sufficiently spacious for a big person like me. Not too surprisingly, there were no maintenance issues – the hotel has simply been too new during my visit. There were also no issues in regards of cleanliness.

Spark Essen City Centre – Breakfast

Breakfast was definitely one of the service categories I was most curious about. Spark in the USA is rather basic and strictly continental. You just cannot say the same about this German hotel. They had a nice variety of bread, cold cuts and cheese, fruit and healthy items. The warm dishes included bolled eggs, grilled tomato, meat balls and some sort of hash brown sticks (which look like French fries, but are indeed a bit of different). I was quite surprised that they also serve scrambled and fried eggs – these dishes are provided on demand.

Spark Essen City Centre – Service

I checked in rather late, also due to the traffic situation around Essen Main Station. The reception was very friendly and welcoming, during check-in and check-out. The WiFi provided felt a little bit slower than in other Hilton places, though. Nonetheless, it was absolutely fine for working. The hotel also offers a gym at the end of the corridor on the first floor. Quite uniquely, it is split between two (comparably small) rooms, which felt being guest rooms in former brandings. The doors to these rooms still featured the original room number, which was kind of funny.

Spark Essen City Centre – My View

I was really curious about how the branding of Spark in Germany would be alike. The rooms were great and felt less basic than in the United States. The biggest difference, however, has definitely been the breakfast. Spark by Hilton Essen City Centre offers an – regarding the hotel price – excellent first meal of the day. The location is very convenient (I don’t include the roadwork situation in the rating, which would definitely lead to a downgrade…). Especially as a hotel for a rail trip (more on the budget side…), it is an excellent choice.
