Peterborough Cathedral (Pictured Story)

The musical Rock of Ages brought me to multiple places in the United Kingdom. Quite many of them wouldn’t have been in scope for me without the show. One of them is Peterborough, a city East of Birmingham (and North of London). The list of sights there is rather manageable. However, Peterborough Cathedral is a major attraction for church lovers. I take you there in one of my Pictured Stories.

Peterborough Cathedral – Location & Admission

Peterborough Cathedral is located right in the city center of the city in Cambridgeshire. The city as such is for good reasons not a touristic hot spot, but the area right around the catholic building is really nice. It is a short walk away from Peterborough Station, which connects to London Kings Cross, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Birmingham and also London Stansted Airport (STN).

Visiting the cathedral is free, a donation is suggested. Tours and special events may request a ticket purchase. Visiting times are Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 17:00 and noon to 15:00 on Sunday. There may be restrictions for religious services or during Christian holidays.

Peterborough Cathedral – Around the Cathedral

Peterborough Cathedral has been consecrated in 1238. The Nave has a length of 147 meters and the tower is 44 meters high. However, not just the building as such is impressing, also the park around it, coming from city center, offers some really nice views of the church. There are some additional buildings around, like the Diocesan Board of Finance.

Peterborough Cathedral – Inside the Cathedral

The large and wide architecture of the cathedral is really fascinating, even if you are not into religion. The nave’s ceiling is made of wood and has been painted in 1240. The altarpiece area is another very catching part of the building. I especially liked the choir stalls, which have been installed in the late 19th century. The crucifix is rather modern and hangs from the ceiling since 1975.

Peterborough costs a couple of chapel. The most famous one is the St. Oswald’s Chapel, dedicated to the Northumbrian king. It was also the burial ground of two former queens. However, Mary, Queen of Scot’s was moved to Westminster Abbey in the early 17th century, so hat only Katharine of Aragon is remaining.

Peterborough Cathedral – Services

Apart from guided tours, there is also a tour up to the tower of Peterborough Cathedral. You can also grab a souvenir at the gift shop.
