I have such a long history in women’s soccer with my previous sports photography project. The more, I was really looking forward to have my first match of the Barclays Women’s Super League (WSL), the likely best women soccer league in the world. During my recent stay in London in April 2025, my wife and I took the Saturday noon trip to the match between West Ham United and Manchester United. The women’s team is not playing at the former Olympic Stadium, the London Stadium in Stratford, but at the Chigwell Construction Stadium. The stadium, which is traditionally known as Victoria Road, is home of the Men’s National League team Dagenham & Redbridge FC. Here is my stadium review.

Chigwell Construction Stadium – Location & Traffic

Chigwell Construction Stadium is a stadium located in Dagenham in East Greater London. The distance from West Ham United’s main ground, London Stadium, is about 10 miles. The ground is located in a residential area. There are some services like stores at the main road Rainham Road. Most of the traffic connections are from the East of the stadium. However, you may also enter from the West side.

From Central London, the easiest way getting to the ground is by Central Line to Dagenham East. During normal traffic times, there are regular connections, typically every ten minutes. From the Underground Station, you can walk to the stadium easily. The directions are given to Dagenham & Redbridge FC. You may also take two stops with bus 103 to Victoria Road Dagenham, from where it is a short walk. From that stop, you can also take a bus North to Rumford. Apart from national rail connection, you can board the Elizabeth Line from there. However, Rumford station is located in TfL Zone 6, so that the fare is higher.

Chigwell Construction Stadium – Arena & Ticket Situation

Chigwell Construction Stadium comes with a capacity of 6,078. There are three covered stands, the uncovered standing area in the East was used for the away fans. The Northern stand was not used at all. Overall, there was a total attendance of 2,315. You enter the ground, which has a typical English small soccer stadium style, from different gates to the different stands. The attendance already tells you that the ticket situation was easy. Our tickets in the upper section of the East stand were 15 GBP for adults and offered a nice view of the ground. The seats were typical plastic seat. The seat pitch was comparably comfortable.

Snack options and toilets at the Chigwell Construction Stadium. The toilets are not too charming – which is not too unusual for grounds like that.

West Ham United Women at Chigwell Construction Stadium – Atmosphere

You have to state that the match was not the most attractive one. This may be one of the reasons that the atmosphere at the match was friendly, but not overwhelmingly energetic. The Manchester United away fans (there were quite many of them) were significantly more active. Overall, visiting the match was nice in that regard, but now overwhelmingly memorable.

Chigwell Construction Stadium – Food & Shopping

In regards of merchandise, West Ham United Women flags were all through the stadium. The reason for that was that the club gave them to the fans for free. There was a small supporter booth behind the entrance as well as s small merchandise store in the stadium building. Maybe also as the match was rather close to the end of the season, the prices were surprisingly low.

Another really affordable experience were food and drinks. A half liter bottle of a soft drink was 2.20 GBP only, the giant hot dog you see on the picture below 5 GBP. Thus, in regards of nutrition, visiting the West Ham United women is definitely a very family-friendly experience. Indeed, there were quite a lot of families and young spectators at the ground.

West Ham United at Chigwell Construction Stadium – My View

Overall, it was a nice experience visiting the West Ham United Women’s Team in the WSL. The Chigwell Construction Stadium needs quite a long transfer, unfortunately. Another negative factor was the limited atmosphere. Vice versa, the fair and friendly mood around at the ground and the reasonable prices (tickets and food) were absolutely on the positive side.
