Blackpool is one of the classic party and beach destinations in summer in England. However, after my time at the British Country Music Festival in 2019, my next visit to the city was in late February 2023. My favorite musical Rock of Ages brought me to town again, so that I needed a place close to the Opera House. Blackpool accommodation are not to rarely rather small, but at least cheap in off-season. I went for a bargain and paid 63 GBP for two nights at the Comfort Inn Blackpool Gresham. Let’s see if that Choice Hotel, which used to be part of the OYO hotel chain, is worth it. The hotel is also sometimes referred as Gresham Hotel or as Comfort Hotel Blackpool Gresham.

Comfort Inn Blackpool Gresham – Location

The hotel is perfectly located for the purpose I had. It is right at the Southeast edge of the Blackpool Winter Gardens and thus really in the heart of the city. The area features a vast number of comparably small hotels. Other central attractions like the Blackpool Tower, Sea Life Blackpool or Madame Tussauds Blackpool as well as the piers are in close walking distance.

I arrived by rail with Northern from Manchester Airport (MAN) and had to take a bus back to the airport due to rail closures / construction work. Both, the Blackpool North station and the Blackpool Coach station are just a few minutes away. The alternative station, Blackpool South, is a bit more far away. There is a major public car park right opposite of the hotel (which does not offer any private parking).

Comfort Inn Blackpool Gresham – Room

I had two nights at the Comfort Inn Blackpool Gresham. The two night stay was 63 GBP at a flexible rate in late February 2023, Friday to Sunday. On top of that, there was an 8 GBP daily fee for breakfast. The room was located rather remotely (but still, within a short walk) doing some stairs up and down. The hotel is not suitable if you have mobility issues – it is, however, also clearly stated on the hotel website. Regarding the price I paid and the location, the room was really fine. I had a larger and a smaller bed, a clothes cupboard and a small desk, on which the hotel placed a mirror and a coffee maker. The desk would have suited two of my computers in parallel, I went for just one.

The bathroom with shower and toilet was really narrow – and as I kicked the toilet paper to the ground with my back when I wanted to have a shower, I placed it on the toilet. However, I did fit in. Blackpool water pressure is a pain. Thus, it takes several minutes to get warm water in the shower. The walls of the room were very thin, so that could listen to what your neighbors are doing. This was especially bothering at the sink, which obviously shared the siphon with my neighbors – at least it sounded that someone ran water in my room when they washed their hands. In general, the level of maintenance was far above Blackpool average – even though some parts of the wall and the desk are likely on the “to be serviced” list soon.

Comfort Inn Blackpool Gresham – Breakfast

The hotel gives breakfast times from 8:30 to 9:30 – what a silly decision if you have a sold out house. It simply means that all guests who have booked that starting meal of the day arrive at the same time. With one person doing all the guest services (i.e. checking people in, taking their order, serving them and maintaining the buffet with bread, cereals, etc.), my first breakfast was already a fail before it started. The poor young man did an outstanding job, but had no chance (with somebody who seemed to do the kitchen stuff) to run this made-to-order breakfast. It took me more than 15 minutes to order, the buffet ran out of several items including bread. On top of that, I have to say that the quality did not please me overwhelmingly.

I decided to arrive at the breakfast room too early on the second morning, which was the more successful strategy. However, this just means that other hotel guests had to wait as long as I had to do the morning before. This is really a shame, as the bar area as well as the adjacent breakfast area is really nice.

Comfort Inn Blackpool Gresham – Service

The staff was really friendly. I felt very welcome. The left luggage was in a community room right next to the hotel entrance, without any lock – which felt a bit of unsafe to me. For about the first 24 hours of my stay, there was a laundry cart in the narrow aisles, which I did not like. The internet connection was a fight. I initially did not have any constant signal in my room, then I altered between the hotel WiFi (the reception did some “boosting”) and a charged British WiFi access, which in combination somehow gave me the possibility to work. I am rather relaxed about it, due to the overnight price. Check-out is already at 10:00. I am not sure how strict the hotel is in that, especially due to the breakfast issues.

Comfort Inn Blackpool Gresham – My View

It is very difficult for me to rate the Comfort Inn Blackpool Gresham. Compared to the many hotels in close distance, this Choice Hotels place is definitely one of the best choices. The value for money is great, the staff very caring. I typically rate the hotels in relation to the standards of the chain and the price I paid – this still leads to a good rating despite the rather long list of issues.
