As part of a business trip to Zurich in November (during which I also featured the James Barker Band show), I this time went for the Hotel St. Gotthard in close proximity of the main rail station. Though I have a quite decent travel history in the Swiss city, I did not have any experience with the place. The more, I was curious about it.

Hotel St. Gotthard – Location

“In the heart of the city” – I guess I have never been in a hotel before for which this description was as true as at the St. Gotthard hotel. The hotel is located right at the Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich’s key shopping district. On the other hand, Zurich Main Station, which also connects to Zurich Airport, is just across the road. There are multiple tram stations as well.

Apart from shopping and good connections throughout the city, there are multiple restaurants and bars around. If you want to head to the Dörfli (Old Town), it is just a short walk over the river Limmat. The hotel itself has a quite traditional touch, but definitely not outdated.

Hotel St. Gotthard – Rooms

I had a standard room, which was 245 CHF (roughly 225 EUR), flex rate including breakfast. Regarding the location, the price is really reasonable for Zurich relations. The room was comparably compact, but very well designed. One feature I loved was the luggage rack, which was part of the cupboard. The work desk was sufficiently large. The mini bar was non-complimentary. Very well structured and very clean.

The bathroom was about the same style – traditional but not outdated, very well arranged (even featuring a bathtub) with all necessary amenities. Overall, it was really a good room, which even featured a small balcony, which I liked very much.

Hotel St. Gotthard – Breakfast / Food

First of all, the restaurant, which also hosts the breakfast buffet, is a real classic beauty and gem. Luckily, this reflects the buffet as well. A very nice and good quality selection of items of all kind. I also liked the presentation of the food offered. The staff was very attentive, so that I really liked my start of the day there

Hotel St. Gotthard – Staff & Services

Check-in and check-out was very friendly and efficient. Overall, I liked the performance of the staff, including housekeeping, the breakfast people and other employees I happened to run into during my stay. The internet connection was also very reasonable and sufficient.

The hotel does not run an own spa or gym or similar facility. They, however, cooperate with a Holmes Place gym in the city center, some 500 meters away from the hotel, so that you can have a free voucher for working out and relaxing there. I did not visit the place, but I felt that the pictures look very nice.

Hotel St. Gotthard – My View

Good central Zurich stays for a reasonable place are typically rare and hard to find. I felt St. Gotthard hotel made it in every category. If you want to relax in the room or have a multi-day stay with more luggage, the compact room may be a bit of a challenge, but despite their size, the rooms are really very functional and nice, breakfast is very nice and the staff gives you a great stay. The location is of course perfect, so that there is nothing I could complain about – a definite Top Pick!
