After I shared a post about weird power plug regulations during my stay, it is also time to share my general thoughts about my night at the Holiday Inn Express Luzern (Lucerne) – Kriens. I chose the hotel as it is just a very short walk away from new Pilatus Arena, where the Swiss Floorball Cup Finals took place in February 2026. Here are my thoughts about the IHG Hotel.

Holiday Inn Express Luzern – Kriens – Location & Transport

The hotel is located in Kriens, a suburb South of Lucerne. The key attraction, as mentioned is the multi-purpose venue Pilatus Arena. However, there are also a couple of restaurants around. With Subway and McDonalds, there are basic and quick option, but there are also some more posh ones. There is also a Migros grocery store, which is not open on Sundays. A gas station in walking distance also offers basic food purchase opportunities.

A key feature of the Holiday Inn Express Luzern – Kriens is its close proximity to the Kriens Mattenhof train station. There are a few regional trains, key connections are done by S-Bahn commuter rails. There are frequent train connections to Lucerne, the ride takes just some six minutes. Thus, the hotel is a nice budget option if you want to visit the Swiss city. The hotel has access to a parking garage, the daily fee is 25 CHF (which is reasonable in Swiss relations).

Holiday Inn Express Luzern – Kriens – Room

I had one night at the hotel in February 2026, from Saturday to Sunday. The flexible rate for IHG One Rewards members for the Standard Queen Room was 124.38 CHF, including city tax. Breakfast is always included in that brand. The hotel is rather new, so that the modern Holiday Inn Express design was not too surprising. It is functional, modern and felt very nice. The room also had a very fine size and also has sufficient space for suitcases. The room does not feature a proper work desk, but a small notebook size work table in addition to the work chair. This works out well for single travelers, but might be bothering, if you for example bring food for two into the room. Overall, I really liked the room, it fully met my expectation.

The bathroom is compact, but very functional, so that I felt that it came with an absolutely fine room design. There is a walk-in shower. Amenities are provided by dispensers. There is some place for your personal toiletries as well. The Holiday Inn Express is a budget-friendly location – based on that, it is a really nice option. The room feels new, modern, well-maintained. There were also no cleaning or other housekeeping issues during my stay.

Holiday Inn Express Luzern – Kriens – Breakfast

Breakfast is served at reception level. The breakfast area has a lot of daylight and is thus very welcoming. The breakfast is nice and definitely within expectation, based on the brand. The presentation is nice as well.

Holiday Inn Express Luzern – Kriens – Service

The reception staff was reasonably friendly. There are signs that the hotel is driving a gym, which I could not locate. There are also no signs in the elevator or the floors. You are also requested not to eat external food in the lobby. The food offered by the hotel during my stay were two different kinds of pizza.

As stated in the introduction. There was a major issue with the power outlets during my stay. Signs in the hotel told the guest not to use Type C / Europlug plus – which are perfectly legal in Switzerland. Minor electronic devices sold in Switzerland come with that plug as well. As part of the aftermath, the hotel stated that their wording was too vague – which I don’t agree to. However, they also stated that the signs will be changed. Details are given in my full post below. The reception staff refused to discuss the issue during my stay when I pointed it out to them. The strict bottom line would have been that you were not allowed to use legal electric appliances. The hotel stated that they changed the signs after my post has been published. As my review and rating reflects my experience at my stay, this leads to a significant downgrade.

Using the Power Socket? Not Allowed! About a Weird Hotel Experience in Switzerland

Holiday Inn Express Luzern – Kriens – My View

The hotel has a really nice location and can even be used as your stay when you visit Lucerne with its attractions. The service issues during my stay, including the power socket one, definitely were the most significant downsides of my stay. Staff refusing to record and discuss issues don’t put a good feeling on a hotel stay in general. If management adjusts these things, it can be a really attractive option in the region.
