One of the key challenges of visiting the last stage of the German Rock of Ages musical tour 2024 in Zurich was finding affordable accommodation. After I spent the first night at Hotel Sternen Oerlikon, I had to change to ibis Zurich Messe Airport. Here is my review of the stay.

ibis Zurich Messe Airport – Location

The hotel is located a few meters away from the Hagenholzstrasse. The area around is rather commercial, which also means that there are just a few restaurants and services around. Most of them are rather focusing on making business with people working around, which means that it is a bit tricky to go for dinner or have a bite at the weekend. You should rather take one of the options in Oerlikon then. The ibis hotel itself has a limited menu as well. The name giving trade fair (Messe) and the Hallenstadion is about a 15 minute walk away.

Despite the slightly remote location, the public transport connection is actually quite nice. Within ten minutes walk, you reach the tram stop Leutschenbach, which connects you to city center and also to Zurich Airport (ZRH). You may shorten this trip by using the bus. Right at the entrance to the hotel, there is a bus stop (Riedbach), which is served by two bus lines and the night bus services.

ibis Zurich Messe Airport – Room

I had one night at the hotel in June 2024, Sunday to Monday. The prepaid rate for a standard double room was 121.40 CHF. The room came with the typical ibis style, which offer decent, but sufficient comfort. I generally like the design of the rooms, which is suitable for most travelers’ needs. The room was compact, but overall really fine and definitely suited my needs for a short stay in the city. If you come by car, there is paid parking as well.

Like the whole room, the bathroom was well-maintained and clean, with the characteristic amenities provided in dispensers. I did struggle a bit with the narrow space between the bathroom door and the shower.

ibis Zurich Messe Airport – Breakfast

The breakfast did not leave too many positive memories. This was not due the selection of items, which was overall fine and within the expected range (rather at the upper end). However, the hotel was very popular at travel groups. Additionally a concert at the Hallenstadion lead to additional visitors, so that the situation at the buffet was rather chaotic. The staff could not really handle it.

ibis Zurich Messe Airport – Service

Apart from that breakfast experience, the staff was really kind and helpful. I was also able to check-in to the room earlier. The WiFi worked fine. However, I did not manage to log in with my mobile phone. The reason for that was a long drop down list of countries of origin of the guest, which just could not be handled by my Android device.

ibis Zurich Messe Airport – My View

The ibis Zurich Messe Airport is a nice place – and one of the places in Zurich, which may offer you affordable accommodation rather close to the city. The services are nice, even though breakfast was a bit too crowded. The Accor hotel is a good option for a city break or a short stay, if you are not going for too much comfort.
