Managing my backlog of possible reviews sometimes leads to some rather late reviews. This posting is my last hotel review which is based on the Icelandic Ring Road road trip my wife and I took in April and May 2023. Fosshotel Reykholt was the last stop we took before heading back to Reykjavik. We chose the hotel to visit the lovely Krauma thermal bath, which is not that far away from the hotel. Here is our experience.

Fosshotel Reykholt – Location

Fosshotel is a group of Icelandic hotels, which is driven by the Islandshotel company. Reykholt is a some 100 people village, which is a some 100km drive North of Reykjavik. There are several hotels in the area, majorly due to the picturesque landscape around. There is a self-service gas station at the route 518, from which you head North to the hotel. Other services, including a grocery store, are located in the village of Kleppjarnsreykir, which is some 6km away. The thermal bath Krauma is North of that village and about the same distance away from the hotel.

Next to the hotel, there is a picturesque old village, which is worth a  look. You could use a bus to get to the hotel (line 81), but the service is operating rather rarely, so that you typically will visit the hotel with a rental car only. During our stay, there were also some round-trip buses, which had an overnight at the hotel. The parking lot is sufficiently large to cover also peak booking periods.

Fosshotel Reykholt – Room

For our Thursday to Friday night in May 2023, we had booked a standard double or twin (double preferred) with breakfast for 194 EUR. The rate was a flexible one. Especially compared to some rooms we had before, the room was rather large and very comfortable. It also feature a nice and very large work desk as well as a fridge, which was very handy. Our room featured a view of the patio of the U-sized building, which was really nice.

Similar to the living and sleeping area, the bathroom felt very warm and modern. The amenities in the shower bathrooms were provided by dispensers. The hotel felt very well maintained and very well cleaned.

Fosshotel Reykholt – Breakfast

Fosshotel Reykholt has a nice and rather large breakfast room. The buffet was rather good in Icelandic relations. You simply don’t get a too posh and large selection in that country. There were warm and cold dishes and a nice range of breads and healthy options. The quality was absolutely fine.

Fosshotel Reykholt – Service

Check-in and check-out were friendly and efficient. The hotel also drives a spa with hot tubs and other facilities. However, you have to pay a fee to get in. As we came from Krauma, we did not go for that experience. Despite the remote location of Fosshotel Reykholt, the WiFi connection in the hotel room was really nice. One thing which was a bit of bothering was the elevator. It obviously needed some maintenance, as the doors were very loud during our stay.

Fosshotel Reykholt – My View

In Icelandic relations, Fosshotel Reykholt offers really nice comfort and service. The price felt a bit too high, also compared to other stays we had in the country. The location is remote, with some interesting sights around. However, it is a good place, especially if you do the ring road trip. The old village next to the hotel is a nice feature as well (we wanted to visit it, but it was rather rainy once we arrived there).
