Visions of Atlantis (28th September 2024, Essen)

Finally, I made it – after featuring so many concerts of different genres, I headed to Essen in the German Ruhrgebiet region for my first metal concert. On 28th September 2024, I was able to cover the show by Visions of Atlantis, supported by Illumishade and Seraina Telli. Here is my concert report.

This posting comes with 208 major size pictures as part of the concert gallery.

Turock – About The Venue

The Turock is a concert and party venue in the North of Essen’s city center. It has a total capacity of 700 for parties and 500 for concerts. The Visions of Atlantis show was the first one I visited in that venue. It is located right on the edge of the shopping and recreation area of the Ruhrgebiet city. Thus, there are numerous options to hang out before or after the concert. From Essen Main Station, it is a bit of a longer walk to the venue. Alternatively, you can take one of the trans from Viehofer Platz station. The area also features some parking opportunities.

Visions of Atlantis – About The Artists

The Austrian symphonic metal band Visions of Atlantis have been founded in Bruck an der Mur in 2000. However, the only founding member left is drummer Thomas Caser. The band has just released their ninth album Pirates II – Armada, which was a Top 5 release in the German and Austrian album charts. The key characteristic of their songs is that practically all their songs are arranged as duets, lead by the two vocalists, French Clementine Delauney and Italian Michele Guaitoli.

Two Swiss support acts in Essen

The first support act of the Austrians is Illumishade. The Swiss rock and metal band have been founded in 2019 and released two albums so far. The most recent one is Another Side of You released in 2024. With Fabienne Erni (vocals) and Mirjam Skal (keys), the quintet has two female members. Two band members, Erni and Jonas Wolf, are also part in the folk metal band Eluveitie.

Seraina Telli is a Swiss singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist. She is typically doing a wide range of rock music, including hard rock, metal and progressive rock. Telli had huge success with her two recent albums on the domestic market. While the 2022 one, Simple Talk, peaked second she even topped the Swiss album charts with Addicted to Color the year thereafter. Telli made it into my Songs of the Week twice, in the 7th October 2022 edition and in the 4th August 2023 one. She was part of the bands Burning Witches and Dead Venus.

Visions of Atlantis – The Show

Seraina Telli opened the evening at the Turock. With Swiss punctuality, she stepped on stage at 19:29. Telli opened her set with the title track of her 2023 album, Addicted to Color. In a very powerful set, she also presented one ballad on her own. She heated up the crowd, who more and more rocked to her music. Her set ended after exactly 25 minutes.

Illumishade impressed in Essen

The second band of the evening was Illumishade. Their set roughly lasted 45 minutes, starting at 20:12. The band played a very powerful set. Especially frontlady Fabienne Erni showed a great touch to the audience and pushed the Ruhrgebiet crowd more and more. Most of the songs like Elegy or the closing ones Tales of Time and World’s End were powerful rock and metal bands. However, there was also the rather quiet and fine Here We Are. A really impressing performance by the Swiss band.

Visions of Atlantis took Essen to the Pirate Bay

The main act Visions of Atlantis took the stage at 21:20, right in time for their some 100 minute set. The versatility of the band, driven by their two vocalists, pushed the fans and made them raise their first or the devil horn hands from the very beginning. They opened the set with To Those Who Choose to Fight, The Land of the Free and Monsters. The Turock was packed and even those in the rear of the ground or the gallery, who did not have a  full view of the stage, rocked to the symphonic metal band. The band controlled their fans and made them “row” their pirate ship at Pirates Will Return and jump at Melancholy Angel. The set concluded with Master the Hurricane and Armada.

Visions of Atlantis – My View

Three really good metal acts gave Essen am impressing and versatile evening. The colorful powerhouse Seraina Telli, Illumishade and their impressing Fabienne Erni and the pirate trip with Visions of Atlantis were three very different acts, who formed a great metal party in Germany. Taking pictures from the rear of the venue was a bit of tricky – I still hope you enjoy the gallery.
