When I am doing concert or sports reports in Switzerland, I typically try to do the whole trip by rail. Especially as there are rather cheap tickets from Germany by Deutsche Bahn, this is rather efficient. However, some spots demand using rental cars. Very often, it is most convenient and efficient to grab a car in Basel, right behind the German-Swiss border. Most of the rentals I did were with Hertz at Basel (Swiss) Station. Here is a review of my rental experience, based on a September 2025 booking. However, some experience from other rentals is included.

 

Hertz Basel Main Station- The Rentals

As said, I had quite a couple of rentals from Hertz at Basel Main / Swiss Station. The review is based on a rental in September 2025. I received the car on a Friday at 11:30. The contractual rental return was on Monday thereafter, 8:00. In fact, I returned the car at around 5:00 in order to catch one of the first trains back to Cologne. I had booked that rental to cover the Switzerland vs. India Davis Cup tie. The rental fee was 142.76 EUR (booked via Hertz Germany online), paid for an Opel Astra / compact category class. My Hertz Five Star status granted me an upgrade to a BMW 3 Class car. The rate included unlimited mileage and basic-level insurance.

 

Hertz Basel Main Station – Location & Office

The Hertz office in Central Basel is located at the Nauenstrasse. It is the first major road when you exit Basel SBB station via the North exit and take a right turn. The station features traffic within Switzerland, but also regular trains to Germany, France, and Italy. At the Northern exit of the station, there is also a public transport hub with multiple tram lines. This includes connections to Basel Badischer Bahnhof (the German-driven station in fact located in Switzerland) and a bus connection to Basel Mulhouse Freiburg Airport (BSL, also EAP, MLH). The station has a small parking garage, which is not accessible for renters. In front of that, there are a few parking lots. There is also a Europcar office nearby, which is a slightly longer walk from the station.

Office hours at the Hertz office at Basel SBB Station are 7:30 to 18:00 from Monday to Friday. On Saturday, the office operates from 7:00 to 13:00, Sundays are 8:00 to noon. Out of hour returns are possible. I did make use of that during this rental.

 

Hertz Basel Main Station – Receiving The Car

Renting a car at Hertz Basel Main Station is typically very easy – and so was that rental as well. The Hertz Gold membership of course eases the paperwork and processing. The staff was very friendly, so that the total check-in process just took a couple of minutes. Once you receive the car, it is a bit of tricky to enter the Nauenstrasse at its quite heavy traffic.

 

Hertz Basel Main Station – Returning The Car

As said, I returned the car outside office hours. There are quite a lot of returns, especially on Sunday night / Monday mornings. You are explicitly asked not to block the walkways around and in front of the office. Unfortunately, people do not act in line with that. The spots in front of the office are very limited. However, it is fine to park the car in the residential area around and drop the key in the key box at the office. Finding a suitable spot is typically easy.

 

The Cars – BMW 3 Class

The BMW I received came with a couple of minor scratches, but has been overall in a very good conditiion. Its mileage at check-out was roughly 28,000 kilometers. Especially at it also had 3D view while parking and manuevering, it has been a very handy and comfortable drive, even in the busy city traffic in Basel. The Swiss motorway toll is generally included in the rental.

 

Hertz Basel Main Station – My View

I really like renting a car with Hertz from Basel. It is just a short walk from the station, so that I is absolutely convenient if you arrive by train, especially from Germany or France. The staff is very friendly. The very limited capacities at night / early morning returns are bothering, though. However, at these times, you won’t need more than a few minutes finding a suitable parking spot.
