Having a relaxing weekend in luxurious hotel – that’s what my wife and I did at the end of July 2026. It was fortunately a short trip, as Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg, one of the classics in the Rheinland region, is less than 30 minutes away from our home. The hotel is part of Althoff Collection and ASmallWorld Hotels and thus part of the GHA Discovery program. I was really curious about this weekend. Here is my review.

Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg – Location

The hotel is located on a hill in Bensberg, a borough of the city of Bergisch Gladbach. Thus, it is located some 20km (driving distance) away from Cologne city center. The castle is located in the heart of the town, with restaurants, cafes, and also two grocery stores in close distance. You do have to factor in to walk uphill and downhill once you leave the premises, though.

Getting to the hotel by public transport is a bit of tricky. The easiest option from Cologne is tram line 1 (stop Bensberg). However, you need to walk uphill quite a bit from the station, which may be bothering with luggage. The same applies for bus options like line 101 to Im Hoppenkamp. If you arrive by car, the hotel drives an own parking garage. The parking fee per night is 34 Euro, though.

Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg – Atmosphere

Schloss Bensberg (“Castle Bensberg”) overlooking the borough on a hill has been built in the 18th century, originally as a hunting chateau. It later served as a boarding school, before it has been transformed into a luxury hotel in the late 1990’s. The atmosphere is posh and luxurious. The rooms have very high ceilings and the parks around the castle add a lot to a stunning atmosphere. As the hotel only got 84 rooms and 36 suites, the atmosphere is very relaxed as well. A fantastic feature of the building is that it is (intentionally) pointing directly towards Cologne Cathedral and thus offers a view from the park and balcony to the iconic building.

The hotel is also a popular place for events. Especially in summer, the hotel is hosting a lot of weddings. On Saturdays, you can even do the civil marriage on premise. During our stay, Saturday featured three marriages – a staff member told us that they even had five on one day in the past. As the building is quite old and thus comes with thick walls, this did not affect our stay significantly, e.g. by hearing the music of the parties.

Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg – Room

We had two nights at the hotel, from Friday to Sunday in July 2026. The flexible rate of 788,00 EUR in total for a Grand Deluxe Room with view of the Cologne Cathedral included breakfast. Due to my GHA Titanium status, we have been upgraded to a Junior Suite with Cathedral view. You have to state that in fact you could not see Cologne Cathedral from the room, as the view is blocked by a tree – but that did not change too much. The room had a classic style. The sleeping and living area was very generous, the room was impressing. I liked that the work desk is around the corner. Thus, I could work while my wife was still sleeping, without disturbing her too much. The power outlets at the desk were taken by a lamp and the coffee machine, though – there was an additional one at the wall. The hotel room offers all amenities, I also liked the welcome present, a preserve and chocolates. Another really nice feature was that the mini bar was complimentary. It has been refilled twice a day, with standard housekeeping as well as with the turn down service. Somehow traditionally, but still bothering, you got a physical key, not a card for the room. If you want to do things separately, this may be bothering.

The bathroom was in line with that. The bathtub separate from the shower felt a bit of small, but the black style of the bathroom felt really nice. Amenities were provided in dispensers. The toilet was a bit separate from that and also featured a bidet. The room was well maintained, even though you could see some marks and dents from previous guests. Housekeeping worked well, too.

Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg – Breakfast

Breakfast, served at the Jan Wellem restaurant. The Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg does an amazing job there. The atmosphere in the room is beautiful, the buffet it put up in a hallway in front of it. The presentation, selection, and presentation is lovely. A key element of the food are the bread items, which come with a superb quality (I’m in love with the pudding pretzels…). Some dishes like omelets are made to order. There are two dishes you have to pay an additional fee for, Bergisch waffles and Eggs Benedict. Overall, it was one of the best breakfast performances I had at a German hotel.

Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg – Dining

The most famous dining place at Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg is the Michelin-star Vendome. However, my wife and I went for other options. Especially in summer, the hotel is offering special dinner nights and so we went for a Spanish barbeque on the first evening, which offered a lovely atmosphere on a warm summer evening. The service was good – there was just a minor issue at check-out. Including wine, water, coffee and beer, the price was 98 Euro per person – not a bargain, but definitely an experience creating memories.

For the second evening, we opted for the Salvador Dali bar, which is majorly offering casual French steak frites dishes. The restaurant is brought outdoors at good weather. The food was lovely again. However, with the fries being a discretion (a.k.a. unlimited), this was a huge burden on the staff and did not work out well at all. Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg offers other restaurants as well as a wine bar. Additionally, the hotel offers afternoon tea and other delights. In December, there is also a rather famous Christmas market there.

Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg – Service

The staff at the hotel is lovely. Apart from the barbeque incident, we enjoyed very professional, perfect service. Thereby, the staff was not that starched, so that you really have a luxurious, enjoyable, but also relaxed time. WiFi in the hotel is complimentary and worked very well.

On basement level, Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg drives the gym and spa area. The gym is surprisingly compact. The pool and sauna area is lovely, but also rather on the compact side. There is a steam bath and two saunas in the sauna area, which is a nude zone. The transition between the pool and whirlpool is a bit of bothering, as there is no dedicated area to redress and leave your bathing clothes. Spa times have dedicated times, which are adult only. However, there were small kids at the end of the adult time. From the pool, you can also use a nice two-level outdoor area. The outdoor pool the hotel used to drive is closed. Apart from Saturdays, there are also day / membership guests in the spa area, which may be bothering due to capacity limits. Like the spa, the gym area is solely open from 7:00 to 21:00 (daytime guests from 10:00).

Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg – My View

First of all: the Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg is likely one of the most beautiful hotels in Germany’s Rheinland region. It promises a luxurious stay – and overall keeps that promise. The service is great, the rooms are lovely and in the middle of a metropole region, you have a really quiet stay. Indeed, the price is rather high (and that explicitly includes the parking fees), but the hotel gives back a lot of value. The spa and pool area feels too limited in size, though – especially as there are day guests in there as well. Nonetheless, we absolutely enjoyed our stay.
