Flyctory.com Cons

  • Breakfast felt slightly weaker to me

During my March 2023 ice hockey trip of Pittsburgh Penguins matches, I had the opportunity to visit the Pens’ farm team for the first time. Some 4 1/2 hours later heading Eastbound, I made it to Wikes-Barre, home of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the AHL Hockey team and partner of my favorite team from Pittsburgh. Before I introduce you to the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza, I share my view of the hotel I stayed in, the Quality Inn Arena in Wilkes-Barre.

Quality Inn Arena – Location

The hotel is located right at the I-81 / PA Route 309 some three miles South of the venue. I majorly chose the Quality Inn Arena due to the price and its location. The neighborhood is rather commercial, with several basic restaurants and some other stores in the surrounding. Despite the hotel is located so close to the major road, it felt very quiet to me. Not too surprisingly, there is no public transport or similar nearby. The Choice Hotel brand stay comes with sufficient free parking lots, though. The hotel used to be an Econo Lodge before, as far as I could see.

Quality Inn Arena – Room

I booked a King Room for one night, Friday to Saturday, in March 2023. The prepaid rate was 86.09 USD incl. tax, which also was significantly less than the local Hilton Hotel alternatives. The style of the room was comparable to a Hampton Inn, I would say. The key difference was the sink being located right behind the room door, but as there was a lot of space for my stuff, I really loved it. Overall, the room had a really comfortable size and was well-maintained and even featured a fridge and a microwave oven. The separate work desk came with a decent size as well.

The bathroom with the toilet and the combined bathtub and shower (North American style) was nice and fit for purpose as well. Nowadays, it is hard to get a reasonable hotel room in the USA below 100 USD incl. tax – the Quality Inn definitely made it!

Quality Inn Arena – Breakfast

For whatever reason, I did not even expect that the hotel is serving breakfast (even though this is one of the features of the Quality Inn brand…). Thus, I was very pleased to have an early bite on Saturday morning before heading back to PPG Paints Arena. The breakfast was a typical basic North American hotel breakfast with some limited hot items as well. The breakfast area was not overwhelmingly charming, but overall, the service has been fine.

Quality Inn Arena – Service

The staff at the Quality Inn Arena was very friendly and helpful. The WiFi connection did work well, too.

Quality Inn Arena – My View

Overall, I was aiming for a well-located, affordable sleep when I booked this hotel – and the Quality Inn Arena definitely exceeded my expectation. The staff is very friendly, the room was really nice and overall, I had a really nice time. The Quality Inn-style breakfast came with a slightly different signature than I am used to, but was overall fine as well. A really great value for money.
