As a first overnight before heading to the United States to see Weird Al Yankovic and tennis in Newport, I decided to stay at the ibis Luxembourg Airport (or: Aeroport, depending on your language preferences) on my way to the Weird Al Yankovic 2019 New England gigs. I was majorly looking for a cheap and reasonably rated hotel in proximity of Luxembourg Airport. My Accor Hotel status also played a role in the selection. Here is the review of my stay in July 2019.

ibis Luxembourg Airport – Location

The hotel is located in Findel, in direct proximity of Luxembourg Airport. Some of the European Union facilities are closeby as well. From my hotel room, I could watch the terminal building, some of the parking lots and a bit of the runways. The hotel is sharing the building with an ibis budget hotel. On reception level, you can even change from one hotel to the other indoors.

Due to its location, there are no facilities like restaurants or bars other than provided by the hotel or the airport in close proximity. There is a petrol station nearby, though.

ibis Luxembourg Airport – Rooms

The hotel was just renovating their rooms during my stay. I already had a new design room. It may look fine at first look, but I was absoutely shocked how Accor can do a room design like this. Some examples in bullet points:

  • Apart from a power plug in the hall, which is quite useless for the visitor, there is only one free power plug on each side of the bed. I absolutely cannot understand how you do it nowadays where people travel with a lot of electric appliances.
  • There was no fixing for the liquid soap, which then just stood at the basin
  • The toilet paper holder is not close to the toilet, but at the opposite wall.
  • There is no light in the hall. Together with the dark green color used in the hall and in the bathroom, this makes it very hard to in fact read the evacuation plan on the room door.

I highly prefer the “Sweet Room” concept, which I for example had at ibis London Canning Town. At least, the bathroom was quite spacious and clean. The rate was very good as well – I paid 58.80 EUR including breakfast.

ibis Luxembourg Airport – Breakfast / Food

ibis Luxembourg Airport has two food places: first of all, there is the Jet Lounge Bar, which also serves some snacks. The major restaurant serves lunch, dinner and breakfast.

Breakfast is definitely one of the signature disciplines of the hotel. The buffet is much larger and offers more variety than you would expect at an ibis. There is a wide selection of bread, fresh items and spreads. The hotel even features a pancake machine, as you typically know it from Holiday Inn hotels. Most of the items had a nice quality as well, so that the overall breakfast performance was really pleasing.

ibis Luxembourg Airport – Service

I cannot describe the reception service as very cordial. I felt a clear expectation by the staff to speak French. I received all Accor Gold amenities as the free drink voucher. However, I haven’t been welcomed as a frequent traveler to the brand. The staff at check-out was significantly more friendly.

Parking is free during your stay. After that, the parking fee is raising significantly – which is absolutely fine as the airport parking lots are next to the hotel anyway. The standard WiFi was absolutely sufficient for normal usage, the hotel also offers a higher speed option for ten Euro per day. The hotel also features a fitness room, which is quite basic. However, it is also quite hidden, around the corner in the 1st floor. Neither in elevator nor in the keycard holder the location of the fitness room is signposted. You need a special key to enter which you receive at the reception. However, having a fitness room in an ibis hotel at all is of course worth mentioning.

ibis Luxembourg Airport – My View

Breakfast and location are definite positives of my ibis Luxembourg Airport stay. I feel that the new room design is quite a shame, even though it is an upgrade in its look compared to classic ibis rooms. The gym and friendliness of service finally lead to an average rating of this airport hotel.
