Johnossi (12th June 2022, Cologne)

Home town Cologne instead of Nashville: after my trip to CMA Fest in Nashville had to be cancelled due to illness, I was more than happy that I could at least feature one very interesting act the same week. Johnossi is an alternative rock duo from Sweden. After a couple of Covid-19-related postponements, they finally made it to one of Cologne’s major music venues, the Live Music Hall. Their support was Per Nordmark.

This posting comes with 320 major size pictures as part of the concert gallery.

Live Music Hall – About The Venue

The Live Music Hall is one of the most traditional venues for concerts in Cologne. Located in the borough of Ehrenfeld, it has a capacity of up to 1800 people. The parking situation, especially on weekdays, when the surrounding commercial area is still buzy, is a bit of critical. By public transport, you either connect to the Köln-Ehrenfeld regional train station or to the Venloer Straße/Gürtel tram/underground station.

Johnossi & Nordmark – About The Artists

The main act of the evening was Johnossi. The band’s name is a simple combination of the names of the two band members, John Engelbert and Oskar Ossi Bonde. Engelbert is typically the singer and guitarist of the band, while Bonde is the drummer. They do music together since 2004. The band is quite successful in Sweden, where three of their albums made it to the Top 10 of the Charts. However, Johnossi also placed into the album charts of Germany and Switzerland. Thei biggest single success is likely What’s the point, which has been released in 2010 and stayed in the Swedish single charts for 25 weeks.

Like Johnossi, Per Nordmark (or simply: Nordmark) is a musician from Greater Stockholm. He is originall from Pitea, however. As a musician, he is majorly known as a drummer, but he is also working as a producer. Unfortunately, I could not find too much information about his solo career.

Johnossi & Nordmark – The Show

Nordmark opened the evening, right on time at 19:30 hrs. The some twenty minute set was very entertaining. Nordmark worked with playback melodies and just sang live, moving up and down the stage and sometimes struggling with the wired microphone. After the first three songs, which I could attend from the photo pit, he gave additional work to the security guys as he performed the remaining songs walking up and down through the spectators. You have to emphasize again that he used a wired mike – which means that the poor security guy had to collect and release the long chord (Nordmark used full capacity) during the show.

Johnossi stepped on stage around 20:15 hrs. Including the four song encore, they show took some 85 minutes. John and Ossi, who were accompanied by keyboarder Matthias Franzén, thereby had a wide range of sounds. There were rather slow and gentle parts – but the duo (with guest musician) were best when Engelbert powered the riffs on the guitar at full force. The longer the show took, the more ecstatic the Cologne fans were – you could even see a crip held up over one spectator moving to the rhythm of the music. Overall, the some 900 fans had a lot of fun – especially the two songs before the encore, Man Must Dance and What’s the Point gave the Live Music Hall a real blast.

Johnossi & Nordmark – My View

This Swedish evening at the Live Music Hall in Cologne has really been a lot of fun. Nordmark is a bit of special, with his dark-ish sound and the sunglasses on stage. But the people loved him, especially when he did the show in the middle of them. Johnossi demonstrated their great talent and potential thereafter. These guys are so talented in the studio, but they are also really good on stage and did well to make their fans enjoy the evening.
