I follow Andreas Dorau and his music since the mid-1990’s. The more I was happy to be able to cover one of his Im Gebüsch tour shows. On 25th May 2024, he played in Essen in the Ruhrgebiet region. Here is my concert report.

This posting comes with 197 major size pictures as part of the concert gallery.

Hotel Shanghai – About The Venue

Hotel Shanghai is a club and concert venue in the heart of Essen. The capacity of the venue is some 500. It is just a few steps away from Essen Main Station. Thus, it is rather nicely connected to the public transport as well as national rail. On a Saturday evening, there is some limited free parking around the venue. However, the parking garage, which is right next door, closes at 20:30.

Andreas Dorau – About The Artist

Andreas Dorau was born on 19th January 1964. This year, he celebrated his 60th birthday in parallel with the release of the Im Gebüsch album. His first hit was already in 1981, when he wrote the song Fred vom Jupiter. The track is one of the key songs of the Neue Deutsche Welle era. However, he is nowadays looking back to fourteen studio albums. His only Top 10 single was Girls in Love, which peaked ninth in France in the Grungeman Remix. His recent albums here and there pop up in the German album charts.

Dorau’s Im Gebüsch tour was supported by Stefanie Schrank. The Cologne-based artist is a comic artist as well as a musician. Apart from her solo music, she is part of the band Locas in Love and played in the bands Karpatenhund and Gorilla Club. On the solo side, she released her first album in 2019 (Unter der Haut eine überhitzte Fabrik). In 2024, she added the eight track album Schlachtrufe BRD.

Andreas Dorau – The Show

The concert was supposed to start at 20:00. In fact, Stefanie Schrank entered the stage some fifteen minutes later. Andreas Dorau introduced the artist to the fans and then went backstage. She played a mixture of rather early and new songs. For example, she presented Fabrik and Die Katze von Jesus from her 2019 album, but also the title track of her new record, Schlachtrufe NRW. Here and there, Schrank, who used the Omnichord on stage, gave some background stories to the songs on stage. The audience more and more liked her set and her music and applauded and danced to the electronic vibes during the thirty minute set.

One Hour of Andreas Dorau Power

After a some fifteen minutes break, Andreas Dorau and his band kicked off is set. He selected a wide range of songs, kicking off with songs like Auf der Weidenalle or Das ist nur Musik at the beginning of the show. However, there were also some rather rarely played songs like Edelstein from the 2011 Todesmelodien album. For two of the songs, Stefanie Schrank joined Dorau on stage, which lead to a nice alteration of the sound.. To me the highlight of this duet part was Ein trauriger Tag. Due to injury, Andreas Dorau had to sit on a bar stool during the show.

The second part of the concert was dominated ba classic 1990’s songs. I was delighted to have Ab on stage again. The song introduced  block of Andreas Dorau’s biggest hits. Before the encored he played Stones Faced Don’t LieDas Telefon sagt DuGirls in Love and So ist das nunmal. The encore started with Im September, before the set closed after one hour with Blaumeise Yvonne.

Andreas Dorau – My View

Even though the venue initially faced some organizational issues, this evening in Essen finally turned out becoming a real blast. Compared to all the Andreas Dorau shows I had seen before, Stefanie Schrank was maybe the most suitable support act I have ever seen on stage for the German electronic pop artist. She did a really catching thirty minute set. Andreas Dorau, The main act did an amazing and very energetic show. The audience was limited, but very enthusiastic and had an intense party hour with a great selection of Dorau tracks. Definitely a memorable experience – not only as this has been my first Andreas Dorau photographic concert coverage.
