Dick Brave (9th July 2026, Monheim)

Three years after I featured a Ben Zucker concert there, I finally made it back to the Monheimer Sommer. The four day concert series at the Rheinland city Monheim featured some really fine artists in 2026 again. On 9th July 2026, Sasha’s rockabilly alter ego Dick Brave was on stage at the open air space close to the River Rhine. Dick Brave played the Thursday evening show without a support act. Here is my concert report from his Back For Good tour.

Monheimer Sommer – About The Venue

Monheimer Sommer (“Monheim Summer”) is a traditional concert series held at the Bürgerwiese Baumberg in Monheim. Monheim is a city which is located between Leverkusen and Düsseldorf. The venue features a maximum capacity of almost 5,000 people. However, Dick Brave’s show was solely attended by some 3,000 people. There are plenty of parking opportunities around, including two parking garages. You can conveniently get there by car, the connection to the A59 motorway is absolutely fine. The bus lines 789 and SB59 stop almost right at the entrance to the venue (Am Kieselgraben) and thereby connect to the commuter rail system S-Bahn in Düsseldorf.

Dick Brave – About The Artist

Dick Brave is the musical alter ego of Sascha Röntgen-Schmitz, who is much better known as Sasha. He was born on 5th January 1972 in Soest at the edge of the Ruhrgebiet. As Dick Brave, the German artist mimics a fictive Canadian artist, who is living in Germany. When Brave speaks to the audience, he always does in German with a Canadian accent. Brave was invented for an anonymous Christmas show, but became very successful finally. Especially Sasha’s debut album as Dick Brave (or, more precisely, as Dick Brave & the Backbeats, which is not used any more), the 2003 Dick This! surprised Germany. It topped the German charts and received a double platinum record. Most of the songs are rockabilly-style covers.

The sophomore rockabilly album, Rock’n’Roll Therapy, “just” made it to the seventh spot in the charts and “just” received a golden record. His 2026 comeback album Back for Good (2026) peaked fourth in Germany. I featured two children’s album by Sasha, both were accompanied by a corresponding book. I especially loved Toto und der Mann im Mond (2023). The 2025 sequel album still received a 4.7 rating in my review. In May 2024, I featured a Sasha show in Düsseldorf, which also featured a few Dick Brave songs.

Dick Brave – The Show

The show was announced to start at 20:00 – and Dick Brave stepped on stage almost in time. His setlist of the some 110 minute show was quite in line with his club tour in spring. This also meant that he started with Take That’s classic Back for Good and Tonight (I Ain’t Rock). However, his cover versions always came with a very individual touch, especially driven by the rockabilly sound. For the Dua Lipa song Be the One, the split the audience into three groups, who had to sing along in different roles. Monheim paid the playful, enthusiastic performance on stage back – and danced to the music of the artist and his band.

The show also had a couple of hilarious moments. One reason for that was the English accent German Dick Brave used on stage. Another were the – sometimes not too truthful stories. Before Shake It Off, he for example explained how he met Taylor Swift in Nashville and helped her to write this song during the transition from country to pop. He also gave his band sufficient space to showcase their talents. During the George Michael cover Freedom, for example, they stroke with a lovely bass and drum solo. Thereafter, they performed and Elvis Presley medley and Summertime Blues (Eddie Cochran) in a “traditional” Sun Studio 1950’s alike setting, when the band shared a single microphone. This has definitely been one of the most intense moments of the evening.

ABBA’s The Winner Takes It All and Elton John’s I’m Still Standing did not only drive the masses, but also were very special in the artist’s rockabilly style. The show was also at its Grande Finale, how Brave called it. However, there was still quite a bit of a show left. With Tina Turner’s What’s Love Got To Do With It or Michael Jackson’s Black of White in the encore, there were still some real highlights left, before the show closed right in time.

Dick Brave – My View

I loved Sasha as Sasha on stage, when I reported from his shows. I also loved his children’s books and music. However, Dick Brave was even rising that high level. You could feel how much the German enjoys acting his alter ego. An excellent band and a lot of energy by the artist from stage made Monheim love this Thursday evening.

Additionally, a big thanks to the Monheimer Kulturwerke (Monheim Cultural Event Authority), who put together a great prolonged weekend with amazing artists again. The open air venue feels that relaxed and gives everyone a great spot for an enjoyable summer show. I will definitely not wait another three years before being back there.
