The Wenzel Nordic Cup 2026 closed with a Nordic battle. Local H71 Hoyvik had their second match after finally having no chance against GOG. Valur Reykjavik faced two losses so far, against German THW Kiel and the Danish team. Thus, it felt really interesting which of both teams could celebrate a pleasing end of this handball pre-season tournament debut, which the live stream commentator called the Nordic Islands Handball Supercup – what a nice branding.

H71 Hoyvik – Valur Reykjavik – Match Report
If they really was a physical cup for this Nordic battle, they could have started engraving Valur as a winner after six minutes of the game. H71’s start of the match has been nothing but a nightmare, trailing 0-6 at that time. You have to say, though, that again the Faroese team showed an impressing fight. Hoyvik closed the score in the next seven minutes again, when Helgi Hildarson Hoydal scored for his team. However, they struggled to tie the score. Hoydal also scored the 12th goal for his team (24th), which meant that there was just a one goal difference between the two teams. Finally, the score after 30 minutes was 16-14 in Favor of Valur.

H71 could not absolutely threaten their opponents
The second half wrote a similar story. Valur again had a better start and added some goals to the buffer between the teams. Typically, they lead by three to five goals throughout the match. The referees more and more struggled with the pace of the game. When Brian Slyne hit his defensive opponent hard, there was an intense brawl on Vid Tjarnir. Especially Valur struggled with the referee team. The only thing which calmed the players down was the discipline and the fact that whenever there was hope for the home team, Reykjavik found the right reply to it.

The match went into its final ten minutes with a three goal difference. There was intensity until the very end of the game. Finally, Valur won by 31-27 in a nice tournament closing game, before the young fans another time went to meet the teams for pictures and autographs.

My Thoughts about the Wenzel Nordic Cup 2026
Yeah, the beginning of this handball pre-season has been a bit of bumpy with THW Kiel not being able to make their flight due to weather. What started with a tricky beginning, turned into a very interesting and sweet ending. The Faroe Islands took another big step in their international handball development. The tournament went well and was a nice combination of high class handball sports and community activities like school trainings the teams held on Saturday. It will be interesting whether the Faroese handball community and their big supporters (like Eventz Foroyar, the organizer of the tournament) can establish a similar tournament the following years. Traveling to Faroe Islands in absolute peak season is definitely quite more financial struggle than I typically have, but to me, these four days on my happy place were definitely worth it.
