Wenzel Nordic Cup: H71 Hoyvik – GOG Gudme 26-35 (14-19)

Due to the shifts in schedule on the first day, the order of play at the Wenzel Cup had to be changed as well. The starting match of Friday, 14th August 2026, faced the first match of local H71 Hoyvik against Danish GOG Gudme. The latter had a convincing victory against Valur Reykjavik the day before and thus were the favorite team in this match as well.

H71 Hoyvik – GOG Gudme – Match Report

You may not expect a Faroese team to be absolutely competitive with the Danish top team – and that felt to be the story at the beginning at the match. GOG was indeed on fire from the very first moment. In the seventh minute, Faroese Oli Mittun gave GOG already the sixth goal, the score was 6-1 in favor for his team and Hoyvik, a suburb of Torshavn, felt to have no chance in the match. However, they did not give up and finally gave their opponents a great fight. GOG could not increase the lead, while H71 managed to at least close the gap during the first half. Boas Ellefsen a Skipagotu (yeah, this handball dynasty got multiple great players) was one of the key drivers of that success, scoring eleven goals in the match overall. As GOG managed to boost their match in the minutes before the intermission buzzer, the lead went back to five goals, 19-14.

 

Powerful Start by the Faroese, but GOG was too strong

H71 played a really respectful match – and one of their strongest parts of the match was right at the beginning of the second half. The first six minutes after the break featured a total of ten goals, with an advantage for the hosts. H71 felt being back in the match, just trailing by three counts. GOG did some pre-season testing and also gave some more player a chance on court, but that was just part of the story. However, H71 could never get back really close. The closest gap was two goals.

Thereafter, you could see that this also was quite some investment for the team, while GOG got back on track. In the 44th minute, their lead was back to five goals and they increased that over the remaining period. In the penultimate minute, Lasse Balstad even gave GOG a ten goal lead (35-25). However, that simply would have not reflected the full story of that match. Thus, H71’s goal in the very final second of the match by Jonas Fossabrugv felt somehow a pleasing closing of this Danish-Faroese duel.
