Faroe Islands – Bosnia and Herzegovina 33-28 (15-17)

Crunch time in Torshavn – two days after Bosnia and Herzegovina battled in Tuzla for a spot at the Handball World Championships in Germany, they faced the rematch on the Faroe Islands. I was looking forward to my second time at the modern Vid Tjarnir Arena on the Nordic Island. Without the injured Elias Ellefsen a Skipagötu, the Faroe Islands gained a two goal advantage from the first match, so they were definitely the favorites in the rematch.

Faroe Islands – Bosnia and Herzegovina – Match Report

The Faroe Islands took an early lead, profiting from a series of penalty shots. Hakun av Teigum took the responsibility from the seven meter line for the hosts. And he did very well at the beginning. He was also one of the most effective players in the regular matchplay, which summed up his match stats to 11 goals, seven from the man to man situation. However, Bosnia and Herzegovina was the better team in the first thirty minutes. They acted more skillful in defense, driven by their goalkeepers. The Faroese team also struggled with their offense. Bosnia had some really impressing shots from the back of the offense. They took the lead and early lead by two goals, equalizing the first match burden.

Whenever the Faroe Islands felt to come back, the guests found the right answer. Thus, apart from the beginning of the match, there was no lead for the Nordics until the intermission. The decision for the ticket to Germany felt to become dramatic. There was a slight chance for the hosts to close up in the last minutes, but finally Bosnia and Herzegovina saved a two goal lead after thirty minutes.

Faroese Force in the Second Period

The unlucky the hosts were in the first period, the well they started into the second one. The first two goals were on them. In the first ten minutes of the second half, the game stayed close, but then, the favorites got the right grip on the match. Pauli Jacobsen showed some nice saves and the Faroese could build up a decent lead. In the 45th minute, they had a four goal buffer in this one – including the victory two days before, Bosnia and Herzogovina now trailed by six goals. The lead stayed in that range, so that the hosts could even give their best players a rest in the last minutes. Finally, they won in front of a stunning crowd by 33-28.

Faroe Islands – Bosnia and Herzegovina – My View of the Match

Especially, in the first half, this match felt much more like a thriller than I expected. The intermission changed the match, so that the last minutes lead to a Faroe Islands handball party. Welcome (back) to my home country, guys – what a brave performance by the small country in the battle of two small countries. Bosnia, however, showed a great fight and pushed, even when the match was more and more turning into a Mission Impossible for them. This also finally lead to a great evening in handball.
