The Most Airports by Country I Have Flown To

I had the idea to this post when I sat in the American Airlines Admirals Club at Pittsburgh Airport (PIT), waiting for my flight to London-Heathrow. On that trip, I had just “made” (i.e. taken off or landed) two new airports on my list, Parkersburg (PKB) and Beckley (BKW) in West Virginia. Thinking back to my recent flight experience, I asked myself which country might have been the one with the most airports I explored so far. Even though (by far) Germany is the country with the most take offs and landings in total in my life, I can already tell you: it is not the country with the most airports I have flown to so far. I felt it might be interesting to share this special statistics on Flyctory.com.

Whenever I added a link to the airport, you also find a review about it on my website.

Highest Number of Airports I visited by Country

So far, I have flown to 52 countries and territories in total. If countries have the same number of airports, I additionally ranked them by the number of flights I had two and from there. The ranking includes flights have already booked for the future, but this does not impact the ranking. The list of airports per country is alphabetical. The links lead to dedicated airport reviews.

12th: Greece

Number of Airports: 4
Number of Flights: 8
List of Airports:

Even though I really like the country, I don’t make it too often to Greece. Especially all the islands would lead to a lot of opportunities to have more than four airports. Fun fact: none of the airports on my list is “superior” so far in any way, I had two flights (one inbound, one outbound) from any of the four above.

11th: Iceland

Number of Airports: 4
Number of Flights: 30
List of Airports:

Iceland comes with four airports as well. Not too surprisingly, the by far most frequently used one is Keflavik (KEF), which is not only the key international airport, but also rather convenient for transfers between North America and Central Europe. 24 of the 30 flights to or from an Icelandic airport are from there. Still, I would love to explore some more of the minor airports in the country, so there is potential for more.

10th: Austria

Number of Airports: 4
Number of Flights: 45
List of Airports:

The third country on my list coming with four airports I have visited so far is Austria. Again, the key airport of the country, Vienna (VIE), is dominant with 38 out of the 45 flights so far. Salzburg (SZG) comes with three flights. I overall like the rather effective transfers and handling at Austria’s capital. Especially Linz (LNZ) and Innsbruck (INN) might be added to this list one day.

9th: Portugal

Number of Airports: 5
Number of Flights: 28
List of Airports:

I did have a couple of Portugal flights during the former LATAM Frankfurt to Madrid business class service days. On top, I had a few transfers via Lisbon (LIS, 18 flights), including the memorable trip to Sao Tome. It is, of course, the key airport, followed by two trips / four flights to Porto.

8th: Sweden

Number of Airports: 5
Number of Flights: 75
List of Airports:

  • Gothenburg Landvetter (GOT)
  • Gothenburg Saeve (GSE)
  • Malmö (MMX)
  • Stockholm Arlanda (ARN)
  • Stockholm Skavsta (NYO)

There is quite some potential that the number of Swedish airports I visited will increase during the next years. Visiting Swedish Lapland or Gotland is on my bucket list. Finally, some Ryanair flights early in aviation life made me travel to Gothenburg Saeve (GSE, 3 flights) and especially Stockholm Skavsta (NYO, 7 flights). Malmö (MMX) is the first airport I mention in this post, which I so far have only flown once. With 54 flights, Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) is also the first airport in this post coming with more than 50 flights in my life.

7th: Canada

Number of Airports: 6
Number of Flights: 30
List of Airports:

Apart from one West Coast trip, all my flights to Canada so far went via Toronto Pearson (YYZ), which is my most frequently flown airport in Canada (20 flights). One Davis Cup trip to Canada put Vancouver (YVR) on the second spot with four flights, as I transferred there on the way to Edmonton in each direction. There are a lot of interesting flights and airports in the country, so the number of 6 airports so far could easily be raised.

6th: Poland

Number of Airports: 6
Number of Flights: 65
List of Airports:

I absolutely love Poland. In recent years, I have been to Krakow very frequently, including my recent mileage run there. Krakow Airport (KRK) comes with 11 flights, but overall, it is the capital city and Warsaw Airport (WAW), which leads that country with a total of 34 flights. During a recent diversion from Krakow (KRK) to Katowice (KTW), I was maybe the only happy passenger. This weather-related travel change lead to my sixth airport in Poland.

5th: Italy

Number of Airports: 7
Number of Flights: 16
List of Airports:

  • Bolzano (BZO)
  • Milan Malpensa (MXP)
  • Pisa (PSA)
  • Rome Fiumicino (FCO)
  • Treviso (TSF)
  • Venice (VCE)
  • Verona (VRN)

In my childhood years, I have been to Italy practically every year. Thus, the country is deep in my heart. Nonetheless, I don’t have that many flights there. I had the most flight legs related to Italy so far with Milan Malpensa (MXP). However, even that airport just has five flights so far. Italy is high on my list with seven different airports, but I rather rarely fly there.

4th: Spain

Number of Airports: 15
Number of Flights: 130
List of Airports:

With fourth-placed Spain, this post is reaching the double digits. 15 airports is already quite a massive list. It is also the first country on my list coming with over 100 flights in total. My six intercontinental flight weekend trip in 2018 also added a couple of the minor airports like Melila (MLN) on my list. Madrid Airport (MAD) is on the top of my list with a total of 74 flights. Another double digit airport is Malaga (AGP), with 15 flights.

3rd: United Kingdom

Number of Airports: 23
Number of Flights: 441
List of Airports:

Entering the Top 3, the list is getting really long now. 23 airport all over the country is quite massive. A key reason for that is my former tour-chasing of Rock of Ages – which brought me to several, also remote spots all over the British Islands. With over 220 flights, Heathrow (LHR) is course course my main air travel spot there. However, there are six additional airports to or from I have flown at least ten times. For example, London Stansted (STN) comes with 61 flights.

2nd: Germany

Number of Airports: 30
Number of Flights: 1,214
List of Airports:

I’m sure you expected a boring post with Germany on the top of this list. Even though I have quite some minor airports in my log as well, my home country just finishes second. The list of 30 airports includes my Top 3 airports overall, though. Namely, these are Dusseldorf (DUS, 434 flights), Frankfurt (FRA, 297 flights) and Cologne/Bonn (CGN, 262 flights). I excluded flight tickets on air rail services for this posting, by the way.

Most Number of Airports: United States

Number of Airports: 38
Number of Flights: 202
List of Airports:

  • Atlanta (ATL)
  • Baltimore (BWI)
  • Beckley (BKW)
  • Boston (BOS)
  • Buffalo (BUF)
  • Charlotte (CLT)
  • Chattanooga (CHA)
  • Chicago O’Hare (ORD)
  • Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW)
  • Detroit Wayne (DTW)
  • Evansville (EVV)
  • Houston – George Bush (IAH)
  • Kansas City International (MCI)
  • Lancaster (LNS)
  • Las Vegas Harry Reid (LAS)
  • Long Beach (LGB)
  • Los Angeles International (LAX)
  • Marion (MWA)
  • Miami (MIA)
  • Minneapolis – Saint Paul (MSP)
  • Morgantown (MGW)
  • Myrtle Beach (MYR)
  • Nashville (BNA)
  • New York – John F. Kennedy (JFK)
  • New York – LaGuardia (LGA)
  • Newark – Liberty (EWR)
  • Orlando (MCO)
  • Parkersburg (PKB)
  • Philadelphia  (PHL)
  • Pittsburgh (PIT)
  • Rochester (ROC)
  • San Francisco (SFO)
  • San Jose (SJC)
  • St. Louis (STL)
  • Tampa (TPA)
  • Tupelo (TUP)
  • Washington – Dulles (IAD)
  • Washington – Ronald Reagan (DCA)

On the top of my list are the United States. There are multiple reasons for that. First of all: public transport in regards of trains and buses is typically poor. The distances are too short. Then, I often had trips with a couple of destinations spread over a wider region. Another reason is also the Essential Air Service. I simply love these typically very cheap flights to or from minor location airports. I have less flights operated by US airports in total than I have Heathrow flights, for example. Nonetheless, there is finally a list of 38 places from where I took off or landed. With 34 flights, New York (JFK), is on the top of my list, followed by Newark (EWR, 17 flights) and Pittsburgh (PIT, 14 flights).
