In April 2026, Frankfurt Airport (FRA) introduced their new Terminal 3. Even though the airport is one of my most flown ones, it took me some five months until I could finally have my first flight experience from there. End of September 2026, I had an Air Europa flight to and from Madrid (MAD). I had read quite good reviews about the terminal before and thus was absolutely curious about it. For a transition period, Terminal 3 more or less replaces Terminal 2, which has been closed for renovation in later summer 2026. Here are my thoughts, based on the Schengen connection.

 

Frankfurt Airport (FRA) Terminal 3 – Location & Transport

While Terminal 1 and the closed Terminal 2 are comparably close to each other, North of the main runways 25L/25C / 8R/8C, Terminal 3 has been built South of those. Thus, Terminal 3 also has its own Autobahn / motorway exit, which is located at the A5 motorway (not on the A3 one). You can drive between the terminals without using motorway as well, but the route is not posted. At the moment of writing, all public transport apart from some local/regional buses operate from Terminal 1. There is a free SkyLine tram connecting Terminals 1 and 3. I will introduce you to it in a separate post. Travel time is 8 minutes, connections are frequent. Terminal 1 connections to local and regional trains as well as to high speed rail network, including international connections.

If you arrive by car, there is a parking garage right next to the terminal. There are certain levels and sectors, the connecting bridge to the terminal is at level 3. As sectors A and B are closest to the airport, there is an increased Business Parking fee. However, you can reduce the parking fee quite a bit if you book in advance. Overall, even the cheaper options give you quite a smooth transition. During my visit, the frequency of connections still felt rather limited, compared to vibrant Terminal 1. Thus, you likely get a good parking lot without paying the upgrade. There are also plans to connect the terminal to the Frankfurt S-Bahn commuter rail system with a designated station. If you transfer between Terminals 1 and 3, you typically have to do it landside, i.e. immigrating to Germany for it.

 

Frankfurt Airport (FRA) Terminal 3 – Connections

Majorly, Terminal 3 took over all Terminal 2 operations. This especially means that practically all OneWorld and SkyTeam carrier, like American Airlines, Delta, Air France & KLM, or Finnair are now flying from this slightly remote place. On top of that, there are airlines like Icelandair and typical holiday carriers. There will also be a low-cost pier in the future. During my flight, Germany’s second largest carrier Condor still flew from Terminal 1 – they will move they operations to Terminal 3 in summer 2027.

Terminal 3 is not operating at its capacity yet, so that we had a very comfortable gate position after landing in Madrid (MAD). Schengen flights operate at gate areas G and H, non-Schengen ones from gates J. You can transfer between them. From non-Schengen to Schengen, there might be an additional security check and there will also be passport checks. I directly headed towards luggage reclaim. Overall, Frankfurt (FRA) Terminal 3 has a clean, classical, a bit of overwhelming architecture. The directions are given very clearly, though. Despite some mobility reduction, I had no issue  getting to the right luggage belt. However, when I arrived there, the screen showed an (unacceptable) waiting time of 55 minutes. Luckily, the time reduced later so that the time between touching down on the runway and grabbing my suitcase was about 45 minutes – which is acceptable.

After leaving the luggage area, you arrive at the arrival hall in the lowest public floor of the building. There are a couple of stores, including a basic grocery store and some restaurants of different kinds. The other end of the hall features the rental car offices. Due to its location, Terminal 3 has its own facilities. Despite there were quite many people on the landside part of the arrivals, it felt quite relaxed. I also liked that some of the seats for people waiting for their beloved ones featured USB-C sockets. The connection to the parking garage as well as to the SkyLine connector tram are located one escalator (or elevator) level upstairs.

 

Departing from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) Terminal 3

From the parking garage, I had to head one level up to departures. The check-in hall feels well structured, generous and had quite some daylight. Typically, there should be the sculpture The First, The Last, Eternity (better locally known as “Hovering Donuts”), which are hanging down from the ceiling. However, there seem to be some issues with it, so that I missed it. Quite some airlines nowaadys offer self-check-in machines, which might be more efficient. There are a few smaller shops in this area. I expected a bit more in that regard. In a separate, smaller hall, there is the travel agency center and additional check-in gates, majorly for low-cost carriers. I visited that part in the evening and there were no more operations. After check-in, security already splits between non-Schengen and Schengen flights. You can change after security, though.

After passing security and heading to the G and H gates for Schengen flights, there are a couple of stores, including a duty free / travel value one. Of course, there are also restaurants. This area is comparably small, before you head into another hallway. From there, there are elevators and escalators up to the airport lounges (see below). I arrived and departed from H gates, The gate area requires an escalator ride downwards. It is again clearly structured. I felt that the number of seats at the gates might be very limited once the terminal is operating at higher capacity. there were European style power outlets, including USB-A and USB-C outlets on quite a couple of seats. There was a smokers lounge as well as additional stores in that area.

Frankfurt Airport (FRA) provides complimentary WiFi, which is rather fast and reliable. Its Schengen operations from Terminal 3. There are some more questionable “traditions” taken over from the legacy terminal. This especially includes that luggage carts require a charge. The airside (i.e. after security part) of the Schengen operations currently runs one lounge, the Air France Lounge. I featured it already in a review:

Frankfurt Airport (FRA) Terminal 3 – My View

Compared to the legacy Terminal 2, the new Terminal 3 is such an upgrade. It feels modern, efficient and – at least currently still – much more relaxed and well-structured. Unfortunately, it does not meet the vast services provided at Terminal 1, but it serves all typical needs. Transfers between Terminals 1 and 3, e.g. if you transfer between Lufthansa and Qatar Airways, are a bit of tricky, though.
