  • Relaxed and friendly atmosphere
  • Handy location

Flyctory.com Cons

  • Bathroom too small

Despite I do have quite a decent flight history with Lufthansa, also on the intercontinental side, my list of flights with them from Frankfurt Airport’s (FRA) major non-Schengen flight hub, Terminal 1, Z Gates is rather limited. When I flew to Raleigh/Durham (RDU) in late May 2026, I had the opportunity to fly from there – and have a look into their Senator Lounge in that area. I good opportunity for a lounge review. Here are my thoughts.

Lufthansa Senator Lounge T1 Z – Location & Access

The lounge is very centrally located. It is just a few steps after passing security, going up to Z level and crossing the duty free shop. Officially Lufthansa names the lounge Lufthansa Senator Lounge Z50, in line with the closest gate. In fact, there are two lounges there on two levels. The Senator Lounge is on the lower level and thus on the same level as the gates. The Business Lounge is upstairs, they share the same reception desk. After leaving the lounge again, you reach the wing with the most US flights and run right into US document check.

The lounge is opening daily from 5:00 to 22:00 hours. It is open to Lufthansa Senators and Star Alliance Gold customers. You might also use it as a Lufthansa HON Circle Member or holder of a First Class ticket. However, in that case, the First Class Lounges or the First Class Terminal very likely offer you a better experience. Until September 2026, you are also able to access the lounge with a Lufthansa Group Business Class ticket in case you are holding an American Express Platinum Card.

Lufthansa Senator Lounge T1 Z – Atmosphere

As I connected from Dusseldorf (DUS), I arrived at the lounge rather early. It felt almost empty, but became more crowded during my visit. Nonetheless, the atmosphere in the large lounge is relaxed (also maybe due to the fact that the United States are a less attractive travel destination for many nowadays). Right after passing the reception desk, there is a work area and the buffet. You also have access to the sanitary facilities there. There is a large window on one side, which gives you beautiful views of the tarmac and the traffic in Frankfurt (FRA). The Lufthansa Senator Lounge at Terminal 1 Z Gates offers various seating options, from lounger-alike relax chairs to bistro/restaurant style seating. Despite the lounge is in fact one large hall, dividers do give you quite a bit of privacy feeling.

Lufthansa Senator Lounge T1 Z – Eat & Drink

I visited the lounge during breakfast time. Lufthansa might not be very top notch in regards of lounge catering, but they do a very decent job. There was a nice selection of different warm and cold breakfast dishes and bread selections from croissants to rolls, pretzels, and German bread. I also liked the healthy options like cereals or fruit of different kind.

You can self-service you in regards of drinks. Apart from coffee machines and water / soda dispensers, there is also wine, beer and spirits, which are available to the customer. The staff at the buffet was attentive and refilled items quickly.

Lufthansa Senator Lounge T1 Z – Services

The staff in the lounge is really nice. However, I did struggle a bit with getting rid of my used dishes and tableware. There is, of course, free WiFi provided, which works very stable and well. The bathroom felt a bit small, though. There were lines for the cabins, even on the men’s side. Especially if you transfer, you can also have a shower in the lounge. If you want to check your connection, there also some information screens. Close to the reception desk, Lufthansa also provides lockers for your luggage.

Lufthansa Senator Lounge T1 Z – My View

I really like Lufthansa’s Senator Lounge at Frankfurt’s Z-Gates. It feels large and modern, the staff is very kind and the atmosphere is relaxed. Food and services are fine. On the downside, though, the bathrooms could use more capacity.
