Flying into Tokyo typically comes with two airport options. In the Northeast of the Japanese capital, there is the airport Narita (NRT). When my wife and visited Japan in September 2023, we flew into Haneda (HND), though. Terminal 3 is having most of the international connections. Here is my review of Haneda (HND) Terminal 3.

Haneda (HND) Terminal 3  – Location & Transport

Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) has three terminals. Terminals 1 and 2 are rather close to each other and also share a common public transport hub. Terminal 3 is remote in the Southwest of the airport grounds. It is close to the delta of the Tama River and located close to the 311 highway on a peninsula.

If you don’t take a taxi or rideshare, the typical touristic way to reach Tokyo Haneda (HND) is by rail. There are two main connections. I highly recommend the Keikyu Airport Line, which offer good connections to city center. The more posh way is the Tokyo Monorail. However, I felt that the transfer to the Tokyo Metro at Hamamatsucho is really bothering including steps, which is very bothering with luggage. There were some construction works during our visit, though. In general travel time from Terminal 3 to Tokyo Main Station, for example, is 30 to 40 minutes and thus comparably short. If you need to change terminals, there is a free, regularly running bus shuttle between these.

Haneda (HND) Terminal 3 – Connections

The US-American West Coast and East Coast, destinations all over Europe and Asia as well as Australia – Terminal 3 of Haneda Airport (HND) got them all. The terminal offers a wide range of international and intercontinental connections. Most international and intercontinental connections by Japan’s Star Alliance carrier ANA are served from Terminal 2, though. Nonetheless, ANA drives an ANA Suites Lounge at Terminal 3 as well.

Arriving at Haneda (HND) Terminal 3

We arrived at Haneda (HND) from a Lufthansa First Class flight. Thus, we left the plane relatively early. Immigration and customs service were straight-forward and well organized, so that we overall had a very convenient time at the airport after arrival. After leaving the luggage area, there are numerous stores who also sell you SIM cards or drinks. Furthermore, there is a kiosk for a visitor IC cards, which allow you to use Tokyo public transport or pay at many locations and machines.

Departing from Haneda (HND) Terminal 3

Like after arrivals, processes at Haneda (HND) are very nicely organized. The check-in area is very large and convenient, the directions are given clearly. All signs at the airport are given in English as well, so that it is very easy to manage your time in the terminal. Overall, the design of the travel parts of the terminal is rather functional than charming, though.

After security, there is a large number of different stores. It is a bit more packed and narrow in there, but still very convenient. If you want to stock up with typical Japanese souvenirs and sweets, it is a good opportunity to check it out there. Haneda (HND) offers quite some seating at the gates, which leads to a very relaxed atmosphere before boarding the plane.

Haneda (HND) Terminal 3 – Services

Haneda (HND) Terminal 3 offers a lot of landside (i.e.: before security). At the edge of the departure area, there are the doors to The Royal Park Hotel Haneda, which I already reviewed. The gallery level above the check-in gates feels to turn into a shopping street with different restaurants and stores and is absolutely worth it. From typical souvenirs to anime stuff, you have the chance to purchase a wide range of items.

In the same area, there is also a small aviation museum and viewing deck. I just visited this place in the night, so that the view was a bit of limited. The presentation was typically Asian and I was really glad thereafter that I did not miss it. Parts of the exhibition is a display of model planes of all the airlines operating from the airport. Through a fully covered pathway, you can also access Haneda Airport Garden, which is a average size, but really nice shopping mal with additional hotels and services. I have been there rather later, so that I just could have a walk after store closing.

Tokyo Haneda (HND) Terminal 3 – My View

Our travels at Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) Terminal 3 were very convenient. The terminal does have some really nice and charming areas, even though these are outside the typical routes of the traveler. The connections to city center are good. Thus, I really likely traveling this aviation gateway to Japan.
