Claus Trophobia is calling his music space rock – or Solid Rock – Drifiting Through Outer Space, as the Austrian is naming it on his own website. On 22nd January 2022, he is releasing is second album, Space Rock Voodoo. Here is my review.

 

Claus Trophobia – About The Artist

Claus Trophobia (his civil name feels rather boring compared to the stage name) is a rock artist from Vienna. In 2017, he decided to go solo and released his debut album No Love one year later. “Space Rock” is thereby rock with a strong tendency to retro-hard rock which a rather dark, but futuristic sound. Here and there, you will find sprinkles of punk in his songs as well.

 

Claus Trophobia – Space Rock Voodoo – Track by Track

The eleven track album lasts 55 minutes.

1. The Perfect Crime

The album starts with its first single, The Perfect Crime. Lush riffs at the beginning of the song lead you directly into an energetic hard rock atmosphere. Promising opener.

2. Big Shot

The guitars drive the second track, Big Shot, as well. The chorus has quite some potential to have fun with on stage. Good stuff.

3. Spiderbite

Spiderbite is darker than the first two songs before. The guitars feel to have even more melodic presence, the almost shouting parts on the vocal side give a touch of black metal. On the background lyrics side, the Sex, Drugs, Rock’n’Roll repeatedly sung just inevitably stays in your mind.

4. Witchcraft

Witchcraft is rather on the mid-tempo side, but creates a nice vibe around the song. Especially the short guitar solo reminds me a bit of Latin American rock vibes like Santana recorded in the past. On the other hand, this is the first song on the album, which gives me a strong feel of the “space rock” idea. Nice.

5. My Demon

The fifth track has a touch of alternative, but also psychedelic rock. During the five minutes duration, the song has a rather enigmatic touch, but also repeatedly falls back into the melodic main theme and chorus.

6. Wake Up

Due to the ease of the main theme, Wake Up almost comes with a pop touch. The melody stays in your mind, even though the song itself is rather a weaker Space Rock Voodoo contributor in my point of view.

7. Lonely Times

The Lonely Times are a harder rock experience again. The song is a nice listen, but it also feels rather similar to other songs on the album. And Claus Trophobia’s vocals don’t only have that touch of screaming, but also feel a bit of whiny to me in here.

8. Your Little Secret

The last four songs of the album are the epic finale of the album – non of the songs is shorter than five minutes. Your Little Secret thereby assigns quite a lot of time for virtuos long guitar parts. One of the best songs of the album to me.

9. Stay Tonight

Stay Tonight is one of the most intense listens of the album. On the one hand, the song comes with a lot of rock’n’roll feeling. But then there are also more “raging” element, a touch of punk and psychedelic sounds. Cool.

10. I Wanna Be Your Nightmare

This title is definitely a message – and this nightmare is taking you over seven minutes of play time. Again, the song works with breaks and very different section. This time, I feel it is a bit of too more here and there, though – especially the psychedelic touch turns into a bit of chaos as well.

11. Unstable

The more intense use of distortion and wider range of sounds of Unstable gives that increased space rock feeling at the end of the album. The song stays in your mind – even though I would not necessarily put it on the list of my favorites.

Claus Trophobia – Space Rock Voodoo – My View

Space Rock Voodoo is definitely an interesting set of music. Sometimes, Claus Trophobia confuses me too much. I also feel that the artist and his music has much more potential than this album is actually illustration. It more feels like a starting point of a journey than having reached the first higher peak already. Still in the upper average range, but with significant potential to do better next time.
