  • Great Storytelling
  • Very relatable, personal lyrics

During the last months, I tried to increase my focus on Austrian music. Lisa Schmid is releasing her second studio album Bittersüss (“Bittersweet”) on 25th October 2024. I had the opportunity listening to the record beforehand and share my thoughts with you.

Lisa Schmid – About The Artist

Lisa Schmid is a musician from Vienna in Austria, where she was also born on 31st August 1984. She is also active as an actress and cabaretist. On the music side, she started releasing songs in 2021, when her songs Venedig (“Venice“) and Wien gegen die Welt (“Vienna against the World”) have been released. Her debut album Nachtschwarz became available in 2022. In 2023, Lisa Schmid shared the EP Asche.

Lisa Schmid – Bittersüss – Track by Track

The eleven song album lasts 35 minutes. As always in dialect albums, I give the lyrics in standard German.

1. Wie Triest

Wien ist so schön, weil man es vermisst (“Vienna is so nice ’cause you miss it”) – the opener Wie Triest (“Like Trieste”). The song indeed plays in the Italian city, you enjoy life, but somehow miss your home tourn. For Lisa Schmid, that’s the Austrian capital. Und hätten wir das Meer in Wien, hätten wir diesen Song anders geschrieben – “And if we had the sea in Vienna, we would have written this song differently”. There is alsos some irony and sense of humor in this write.

2. Bittersüss

Like the opener, Bittersüss (“Bitter sweet”) is a song, which majorly makes use of folk, pop and rock elements. This finally leads to a very special and unique, but also personal touch of the song. I really like ti.

3. Traurige Lieder schreib ich am Meer

According to the song title, Lisa Schmid states that she writes sad songs when she is at the sea. This is a nice link to Wie Triest. The song has mainstream radio duration and has an interesting touch, based on its interesting songwriting style.

4. Liebe Grüsse aus Lignano

Italy and being at the sea / at the beach is one of the key topics of this album. This time, it is about feeling and thoughs from Ligano. The Austrian makes some fun in here about how limited visitors are reflecting about Italy. The song has a nice Americana touch.

5. Amoi no

Amoi no (standard German “Einmal noch”) means “Once again”. The song is about a relationshop which is about to fade. However, Lisa Schmid does not want to give up and least have a final time together. Good melody and good storytelling lead to a good song.

6. Kartenhaus

The next song on Bittersüss is Kartenhaus (“House of Cards”). The song, which has a slight folk-pop touch, is telling the story of relationship, but also comes with a very uplifting message – Wenn ich noch einmal leben kann, mach ich es genauso, nur ohne Angst (“If I gonna live another time, I will do exactly that way t- jus without fear”).

7. Regen

After these previously unreleased songs, Lisa Schmid presents two feature singles of Bittersüss now. Despite the song is about the “Rain”, it comes with rather happy vibes. The guitars even spread some surf-pop vibes. Nice one.

8. Donaustadt

The Donaustadt is a rocking and very groovy song with a very present bass presence. Despite her age, she is stating Sterben will ich nur in Wien (“I only wanna die in Vienna”). Another very nice and catchy homage to the Austrian capital.

9. Trauerweide

This song describes how Lisa Schmid is going back to the house she grew up and lived in. She is sitting under the Trauerweide (“Weeping Willow”) again and things about all the memories this place. Not only due to the the lyrics, the song could also be a basis for a great country song – the vibes are not that far from that.

10. Autobahn

In the second last song, the Austrian artist is taking us to the Autobahn (“Motorway”). Again, she is nicely combining picturesque lyrics with personal struggle and thoughts. A very intersitng song, which is definitely worth the listen.

11. Steh ned wanand on mein Grob

The death is another key topic of this album. In the chucker-out, Lisa Schmid states “Don’t stand crying on my grave”. This song has a really nice flow and arrangement. A really nice listen.

Lisa Schmid – Bittersüss – My View

Bittersüss is fascinating me. Especially the storytelling by Lisa Schmid is excellent. A single situation is developed towards multi-faceted topics. The songs are very personal and come with a suitable style. On top of that, I like the slightly cheeky way she is telling her stories. Well done, Lisa!
