In order to cover the Home Free concert in Hamburg in September 2023, I had a night at the ibis Styles Hamburg Barmbek. You just cannot argue that the hotel has been close to the venue (in fact, there was a 30 minute commuter rail ride in between…), but the Reeperbahn Festival and a trade fair limited the selection of affordable accommodation significantly. Here is my review.
ibis Styles Hamburg Barmbek – Location
The hotel is located in the Hamburg borough of Barmbek. There are numerous restaurants in the area, but also some sports stores, supermarkets and the Museum of Labour. Despite the area is busy, I had a very quiet and pleasant night.
The public transport situation of the ibis Styles Hamburg Barmbek is ideal. Just a few steps away from the Barmbek station, which features three S-Bahn commuter rail lines, S1, S11 and S31. You have to say that there are certain similarities in their destinations, but especially S1 connects you to both, the main station and Hamburg Airport (HAM), which is very handy. Additionally, the U3 Underground (which is a bit like a circle line is serving Barmbek in three directions and there are several bus services. If you happen to arrive by car, the hotel is driving a parking garage.
ibis Styles Hamburg Barmbek – Room
I had a one night stay in a Comfort Double Room. The flexible rate for the Wednesday to Thursday included breakfast and was not public. Typically, prices for that hotel range between 90 and 140 EUR per night and room. I like ibis Styles as – in contrast to a standard ibis – the designs are always quite a surprise. My fifth floor room had some really nice racks and other storage items close to the entrance, a large bed and a nice work place near the window. The room design was really nice and was also well-maintained. The hotel overall looked rather new or renovated to me.
Unfortunately, I struggled with the bathroom. Not that the size or style as such were bad. I also enjoyed the large shower with a basic amenity dispenser – before I used it. It may also be due to my body size, but after having the shower, the whole bathroom was wet. Especially in front of the toilet, there was at least 5mm of water. The leveling of the floor was really not functional as well – I felt that, in best case, water will move towards the glass wall in the shower, but never to the drain next to the shower.
ibis Styles Hamburg Barmbek – Breakfast
On weekdays, the ibis Styles serves breakfast from 6:30. I was there just a few minutes later. At 6:45 latest, the area was packed. Overall, the service worked well and the selection and quality of items was very pleasing. However, only one of the two coffee machines could dispense drinks like espresso, which lead to some queues. There were also basic warm dishes (scrambled and boiled eggs, sausage etc.). Additionally, the breakfast area, which is a public restaurant during other times, serves pancakes made by a pancake machine.
ibis Styles Hamburg Barmbek – Service
I was not overwhelmingly happy with the reception desk. The check-in was chaotic (it also felt weird that the hotel office had some beers while there were queues at check-in). Finally, the reception agent put my registration sheet right in front of another guest, which you even could very strictly see as a breach of my personal data. The check-out was also rather unfriendly. The breakfast staff was kind though. You receive a code for the WiFi, which worked well. The hotel drives a gym, but with a treadmill and a rowing machine, the variety was rather limited. You are not allowed to use the gym in night hours – presumably as it is right next to a hotel room.
On top of that, I had some issues with the elevator. After having a look to the gym, I wanted to go upstairs to my room. However, the elevator forced me to go down to reception level.
ibis Styles Hamburg Barmbek – My View
On the one hand, the ibis Styles Hamburg Barmbek feels modern, fresh and friendly. On the other hand, there were too many avoidable issues. I was not happy at all with the reception performance and the bathroom has been a mess. The other issues are minor, but boost the thought that the hotel is not absolutely keen on making the hotel guest happy. Still, the rooms are nice, the breakfast is a good one and the public transport situation is great.
