Women WFCQ – Denmark – Netherlands 2-5 (1-1, 1-0, 0-4)

While Denmark vs. Netherlands does not feel like a too interesting match-up for floorball traditionalists, the days in Lignano Sabbiadoro felt to suggest that this could become an interesting one. In their first two matches, the Dutch team played very energetic and disciplined, while Denmark was definitely not as strong as in their best days. Here is my match sum-up of the first game on the third matchday at the 2025 World Floorball Championship Qualifications in Italy.

Denmark – Netherlands – Match Facts

Denmark felt going for offensive pressure in the first moments of the match. However, they gave strength to the Dutch team, giving the nominal underdog the first power play after less than a minute. While Pascal Luginbühl’s team could not convert the first woman advantage in the rink, they did better in the second one. With Danish Martina Morch being on the sin-bin after a hit, Marissa Meijer gave her team the lead after ten minutes. The Netherlands survived an own box play soon thereafter. However, when Marie Abdilgaard tied the score after 14 minutes, the match felt to get back on the expected track.

In the second period, Denmark converted better. They had a slight advantage in shots, but overall, the Netherlands played their match and could again rely on their strong netminder Arianna Schreppers. Nonetheless, it was Denmark who took the lead. Lina Voldby’s goal in the 29th minute also lead to a 2-1 score in the second intermission.

Strong Dutch Comeback

Finally, the Netherlands turned the third period into a Danish nightmare. Jasmine van der Veen tied the score in the 42nd minute. When added her second goal just three minutes later, you could feel that Denmark was not only in scoring trouble, but also in mental one. A tied score would have made the Nordic team advance to the WFC main event, so the match stayed interesting. Again, it was a power-play situation which created the momentum. Smilla Hundevadt was on the penalty bench after fifty minute, when Ilse Stoffers raised the score to 4-2 in favor of her team.

Denmark had the chance to close up in a power play but did not dare to pull their goalie Mette Thorsager Jensen. Thus, they had to do thereafter, which Rebecca Krauts made use of with less than two minutes left on the clock. Her empty-net goal well-deservedly send the Netherlands to Brno and/or Ostrava, while the Danish team had to hope for the Place 5 match on Saturday.
