South America at Miniatur Wunderland

As much as Lordi is the band I featured the most in my album reviews, Miniatur Wunderland is taking some sort of this role on the travel review side. This posting about the best rated attraction in Germany is already the fourth one which takes you to the magnificent scale model exhibition in Hamburg. My Pictured Story this time takes you to the South America exhibition. The posting reflects the state as of December 2024, when I visited the place the last time. However, this part of Miniatur Wunderland, which has opened in 2021, is planned to be extended in the future.

There are two places in the world, which never seem to sleep: New York City and this attraction in Hamburg. Hope you enjoy me taking you there.

Miniatur Wunderland – General Information & Review

I already did a review of the Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg, Germany’s best rated attraction on Tripadvisor, before. You can find the link below.

I also featured:

  • Yullbe Wunderland – a 3D experience virtually taking you to inside the world of the scale model landscape
  • Monaco & Provence section – introduced in 2024, it features random results Formula One and Formula E races in Monte Carlo (Pictured Story)

South America At Miniatur Wunderland

Maybe here is no section, which illustrates the success as much as South America. You have to walk along a covered footbridge over the Speicherstadt canals to reach that part of the exhibition. The reason for that is simple: the attraction absolutely runs out of space in their traditional premises. The section featuring South America covers two levels. However, the upper level just featured general exhibitions and an overview of the history of Miniatur Wunderland during my visit. At that time in December 2024, the section featured Rio de Janeiro, Antarctica and Patagonia. The sections have not been constructed in Hamburg, but built by the South American scale modeling family Martinez and then shipped to Germany. However, some parts like the waves in the Ocean are done by the Hamburg team.

Rio

Rio de Janeiro is likely the most popular city in Brazil to travel to. Miniatur Wunderland does the beach mega-city in Miniatur Wunderland style. People sunbathing at the Copacabana, almost wearing anything, the Cristo Rendentor statue, but also people playing soccer in the Favelas – you can explore all of that. Of course, there is also rail traffic. The city gets a very different touch, when the lights go down and night breaks out over this scale model. The key attraction of this part of Miniatur Wunderland is, however, the Rio de Janeiro Carnival. The samba cars are moving, the people are dancing. All of that is presented with the typical sense of humor and irony of the attraction.

Antartica & Patagonia

The other section currently available to public is Antarctica and Patagonia. One of the key features of this part is in fact the water between. Miniatur Wunderland created a mechanism, which is able to simulate the high and rough waves in that area. However, both parts, the South Pole area and the Southern tip of South America, are spectacular to watch. Of course, there are multiple buttons around which make penguins move or initiate other entertaining action in the model landscape. On the other side of the Drake Passage, the amazing landscape of Patagonia and the glaciers are great to watch. Naturally, the nature in that part of Miniatur Wunderland is rather sparse. Overall, this is a very impressing addition to Miniatur Wunderland. The planned enhancements might even boost the South America area.
