Faroe Islands – Montenegro 4-0 (2-0)

9th October 2025 featured the highlight of my trip to the Faroe Islands. After being at the National Soccer Stadium Torsvollur as spectator with KI Klaksvik in UEFA Conference League and as a Business Guest for a national team match, this time I made it to ground level. The Faroe Islands faced Montenegro in the Euro Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup 2026. After beating Montenegro abroad, the Nordic team still had slight chances for the second spot in the group. In order to reach that, the underdog needed to win twice that weekend, once against the Balkan team and then – much harder to achieve – on Sunday against Czechia. Here is my match report.

Faroe Islands – Montenegro – Match Report

With just some 2,000 spectators, Torsvollur did not even run close to its capacity. Bad luck for the people who did not attend the match – they really missed a great battle. During the warmup, the DJ played Jimmy Cliff’s I Can See Clearly Now – but with 8 degrees, drizzling rain and strong winds, the conditions were far from a bright sun shiny day in Torshavn. Montenegro did not feel having trouble with the Faroese weather in the first minutes. The guests could control and had minor scoring opportunities.  The momentum changed when the Faroese launched a right wing attack in the 16th minute. Finally, Arni Frederiksberg gave a short pass in the penalty area to Hanus Sorensen, who scored the first goal for the Nordics.

Both teams had some opportunities thereafter. However, Montenegro often failed to spread the game over the full width of the pitch, struggling with a very disciplined Faroese defense. And the hosts were more effective in offense. In the 36th minute, they got a free kick after Frederiksberg have been hit hard by a defender. He sniped it towards the goal himself and the ball hit the net. Initial match statistics showed the Faroese forward as the scorer, but officially, unlucky Milan Roganovic conceded an own goal in that situation. That was also the score after 45 minutes – both teams had the chance to grab some warm tea and dry down under these special conditions.

The Faroese Party continues in the 2nd Half

There were still 45 minutes for Montenegro to prevent the upset. However, situations like in the 56th minute made it too easy for the Faroese to have a soccer party at their home soil. Frederiksberg was absolutely uncovered on the right wing and could play a lovely cross into the Montenegro danger zone, where Sorensen’s head had one of the easiest tasks of the day to raise the lead to three goals. A fun fact about that goal was that right before that situation, Frederiksberg initially wanted to have one of his long throw ins from the right side, but Meinhard Olsen had taken a spare ball for a short throw already. The match slowed down thereafter, Montenegro had some chances, but could not convert.

The guests simply had a bad day – and the Faroese goal party was still not over yet. After a shot from central position by Joan Edmundsson in the 71st minute, Andrija Vukcevic did a Cucurella Memorial Block with his arm. Frederiksberg took the ball and converted the penalty shot easily (72nd). Thereafter, the very fair match had a few opportunities, but finally both teams saved their energy for the upcoming tasks – and, in case there was red, white, and blue in their heart, for the end of match party.

Faroe Islands – Montenegro – My View of the Match

Based on a strong defense and smart strategy, the Faroe Islands had an amazing victory against Montenegro. Again, they proofed that quite a lot of miracles can happen on their home (artificial turf) soil at Torsvollur. Montenegro struggled with the conditions and also could not keep up their match after they had caught the first goal early in the match. In case the Nordics add some miracles in their final matches against Czechia and Croatia, there might even be a slight chance to qualify for the World Cup.
