With the surprising loss against the Netherlands, Denmark had to go into the Place 5 match of the 2025 WFC Qualification tournament in Italy. The last ticket for Czechia was due to be assigned in the battle with the host team. Italy beating Denmark would definitely be another sensational upset, but after the first three days in Lignano, this did not feel absolutely unrealistic.

Denmark – Italy- Match Facts
Denmark felt to take the initiative from the very beginning of the match. While they could no convert an early power play situation, Smilla Hundevadt gave her team the initial lead in the tenth minute. Italy even had more shots on Mette Thorsager Jensen than her their opponents in the first period. Nonetheless, the trailed after twenty minutes.
A Danish Miracle in the Second Period
The second period became memorable. Denmark felt being one step closer to the WFC main event when Sofia Frederiksen converted a power-play situation in the 24th minute. However, Italy did not give up and less than two minutes thereafter, Marta Pelliccioni closed up to 2-1. As less than a minute later, Victoria Wohlert was sent to the penalty bench, Italy felt to have the great chance to tie the score in power-play. However, Italy just did not manage to convert the momentum to mental stability. The following minute was brutal for the hosts. Within 48 seconds, Denmark managed to score three short-handed goals (2x Marie Abildgaard, Frederiksen). Within 25 years of following international floorball, I never explored something similar.
Italy was in urgent need for a comeback now. Naturally, it took them some time to recover and get back into the match. The buzzer calling for the second intermission must have somehow felt like a relief for the team, especially as they faced two bench penalties in the meantime.
Slight Worries for Denmark in the third period
Italy tried to come back in the third period, but Denmark was just too solid. There were ten attempts on the Danish goal in the last twenty minutes – and at the beginning, there was some hope for Italy. Camilla Olshov (48th) and Pelliccioni (49th) scored two goals in one minutes. With the intermediate score of 5-3, another Italian goal might have given mental impact to the Nordic team, but their defense and the good Thorsager Jensen did not allow that. In the penultimate minute, Frederiksen’s third goal, this time into the empty net, was the ultimate decider. While Italy was in tears, Denmark celebrate their ticket to Ostrava and Brno after a remarkable and memorable match.
