My Twelve Favorite Songs about Feeling Cologne

Okay, this one will be a bit of a tougher posting for most of my readers. Since quite a while, I felt I should praise my home town Cologne – in a very Flyctory.com-alike style. There is a huge volume of songs about my home. Many of them touch my heart. Thus, I felt it is a nice time to share the twelve songs which do that the best. And yeah: most of them are in Kölsch, the Cologne style of speaking German. I felt that I at least give you the translation of the title as well.

My 12 Favorite Songs About Cologne

In this list, I tried to nominate each act just once. This did not work out completely. The playlist below also contains additional great tracks about my home town.

12th: Meine Liebe, Meine Stadt, mein Verein by Domstürmer

Title in English: My love, my town, my club
Domstürmer are a relatively new band. They have been founded in 2006, the key member is singer Michael Micky Nauber. This song celebrating the love to the city has been released in 2012.

11th: Heimat es by Paveier

Title in English: Home is
The Paveier are one of the most traditional Cologne language and carnival bands in town. They have been founded in 1983 already. However, only two founding members are still active. Heimat es is a song about feeling home in Cologne, where everything is familiar to you. The song has been released in 2012.

10th: Hey Kölle Du bes e Jeföhl by Höhner

Title in English: Hey Cologne, you are a feeling
Höhner, who have been founded in 1972 already, are one of the most popular bands in Cologne. They are the only band I feature twice in this post. A remarkable fact about the bands is that songs like Viva Colonia became very popular even outside of Cologne. This song is listing all the good things about the city. It has been released in 1992. None of the founding members is still active.

9th: Unsere Stammbaum by Bläck Fööss

Title in English: Our ancestry tree
If you talk about traditional Cologne bands, you just cannot avoid talking about Bläck Fööss. The band, whose name translates to “Bare Feet”, is active since 1970. They have released several songs, which are well-known in Cologne. I went for this 2000 song, which is praising the diverse ancestry and diversity in the city.

8th: Jedäuf met 4711 by Klüngelköpp

Title in English: Baptized with 4711
If you ever read the most popular post o Flyctory.com, you know that the well-marketed brand 4711 is in fact not the original Eau de Cologne (yeah, the perfume is named after the city, not vice versa). Nonetheless, the Klüngelköpp do not include Farina, but this brand in their song. The band has been founded in 2003 and is one of the key bands on Cologne carnival stages. The song has been released in 2013.

7th: Kölsche Jung by Brings

Title in English: Cologne Boy
Brings is one of the bands which boosted the new Cologne party-rock style in the early 2000’s. Three of the five members are still founding members, the main ones are the brothers Peter and Stephan Brings. Their 2000 song Superjeilezick got a golden record in Germany. This has been ten years after Brings have been founded. Kölsche Jung, which is about the pride about coming from Cologne, has been released in 2013. It is a platinum record single in Germany.

6th: Mer stonn zo dir, FC Kölle by Höhner

Title in English: We stand by you, FC Cologne
Höhner, the second. This song has been released in 1998. Since then, it is the official anthem of FC Cologne, the local soccer Bundesliga club. The song is regarded to be one of the best club anthems in Germany. According to the lyrics, there are fans of the club everywhere.

5th: Denn wenn et Trömmelche jeht by Räuber

Title in English: ‘Cause when the drum is going
Somehow, this carnival traditional is linked to FC Cologne as well – it is the song which is played after every home goal of the team. The band, who recorded it is the 1991 founded Räuber. The song was one of their first singles, released in 1993. The song describes how people are touched and ready to party once they hear the drums of the carnival parades and parties. It includes the shout Kölle Alaaf, the traditional Cologne carnival greeting.

4th: Stadt met K by Kasalla

Title in English: City with K
Kasalla is another band, which drove Cologne rock in recent years. They have been founded in 2011. One year later, they already had their breakthrough with Pirate (“Pirates”), which is a golden record in Germany. Stadt met K has been released in 2015. The song refers to the car registration plate sign for Cologne, which is a “K” (for Köln).

3rd: Nix Wie Bessher by BAP

Title in English: Nothing Like Before
BAP (“Daddy”) is the only act in this posting, which is not really somehow linked to carnival music. The band has been founded by Wolfgang Niedecken in 1976. Nowadays, they name themselves Niedeckens BAP. The rock band has a large fan base in Germany – the last 16 of the overall 18 studio album hit the Top 3 of the German charts. The most well-known song is likely the 1982 Verdamp lang her, in which Niedecken reminds of his father. Nix Wie Bessher has been in 1996 as part of the Amerika album. It reminds of his childhood live in his borough of Cologne. I featured a BAP home town concert in December 2024

2nd: Kölsche Jung by Willy Millowitsch

Title in English: Cologne Boy
If you named a traditional and famous citizen of Cologne, Willy Millowitsch has to be on that list. He was born there in 1909 and died in his city in 1999. He is not only famous as a singer, but also as an actor and drove a Cologne popular theater. There is a statue for him at the Eisenmarkt. A few months before his death, Cologne celebrated Willy with a giant TV show in the packed Kölnarena. The song has in fact been written by Fritz Weber, but his version is likely the most popular one.

My Favorite Song About My Home Town Feeling:

Et jitt kei Wood by Cat Ballou

Title in English: There is no word
“There is no word which can describe what I feel when I think about Cologne” – that’s the leading line of the chorus of this song. And I just have to become sentimental when listening to it. The band, Cat Ballou, has been founded in 1999. A fun fact is that they are the only band in this post, who have not been founded in Cologne, but in the East suburb Bergisch Gladbach. Et jitt kei Wood has been the breakthrough single of the band in 2012. The song received a golden record in Germany, peaking 29th in the charts. And I simply cannot listen to it without becoming sentimental.
