The Historic Tram Museum Cologne-Thielenbruch (Straßenbahnmuseum Thielenbruch) is a place which has been on my bucket list for quite a long time. Finally, I made a visit to the charity-driven place in June 2026. The organization behind it is Historische Straßenbahn Köln (“Historic Trams Cologe”). A good opportunity to share a museum review from my home town.

Historic Tram Museum Cologne – Location & Admission

The museum is located in a former railyard at the Thielenbruch tram station in the equivalently named borough of Cologne. You access it by crossing a restaurant. The area around is rather residential. There is a forest close to the location as well. The most straightforward – and somehow most suitable – way to get there is by tram / light rail. Two lines, 3 and 13, have their terminus at the picturesque tram station. There are direct connections to Cologne trade fair and the corresponding regional/national rail station. In order to reach the city center and Cologne Main Station, you need to transfer. Thielenbruch is part of the inner city zone of Cologne. Alternatively, there are two parking lots close to the tram station and museum.

A key reason that I haven’t made to visit the museum before are the opening times. It is opening on the second Sunday of each month only, the days are also announced on the museum’s website. On these days, times are 11:00 to 17:00. Adult admission to the museum is 2 Euro.

Historic Tram Museum Cologne – The Trams

The railyard holds over 20 trams. They span from the rather early 20th century to comparably newer cars, which have been decommissioned in the early 2000’s. Quite a lot of the museum’s rolling stock is still ready to use. The History Tram Museum Cologne is also running some historic tram rides at scattered times. However, these are not part of the normal opening times. Most of the trams and vehicles are documented in detail in German. Quite a few of them can still be boarded. In these cars, there is always staff, who additionally explain you about the story of them. The museum is driven by a charity, the staff are volunteers. Especially when you enter the wagons and live or lived in Greater Cologne, you will run into many very personal stories. Historic ticketing machines and tram maps were especially fascinating to me.

Historic Tram Museum Cologne – The Other Exhibits

The Historic Tram Museum Cologne Thielenbruch offers much more than “just” historic trams. There are a lot of pictures and other exhibits illustrating the local transport history of Cologne and the Rhineland region. A key location for these items is the exhibition room, which is located on one side of the former railyard. I especially loved the tram models and historic pictures in that room. However, there are even more exotic items in stock like carnival medals or Kölsch (Cologne beer) glasses branded after the trams or the local transport authority KVB. Throughout the railyard, there are also other exhibits and technical items. Kids also love to control the energy collector in a small simulator.

There are two model train areas in the museum. The key one has been built into one of the trams and opens from a quarter past to a quarter to any hour of visit. It represents historic Cologne and is very popular among visitors. Thus, you need some patience and arrive early during each time slow so that you have some good views. Another model train in larger scale is located in the exhibition space. It is less popular and interesting, though.

A special exhibit in the museum is the “virtual time travel”. The VR ride takes you in a historic train during the early 20th century, before WWI. Even if you don’t speak (Cologne style) German, it is very interesting. The ride takes roughly ten minutes and has formerly been shown at TimeRide, a VR attraction in Central Cologne. It is located in one of the trams of the Historic Tram Museum Cologne. In order to have that experience, you need to buy an additional admission (5 EUR).

Historic Tram Museum Cologne – Services

The staff is very friendly and helpful. During opening days, there are also guided tours. Close to the entrance, there is also a small museum shop. It also sells the virtual ride tickets. Additionally, there are books, calendars, postcards and some models, even though there is a certain focus on buses and not on trams. In addition to the restaurant you cross when you enter, there is also a museum cafe on the ground of the museum premises.

Historic Tram Museum Cologne – My View

The museum is truly a hidden gem. Especially if you have a Rhineland background, it creates a lot of memories. The trams are in great condition and the staff is very helpful. You also get there very easily by public transport or by car. Bad luck that the opening times are that limited. Nonetheless, I absolutely recommend to visit this place, in case it fits to your schedule. It is also a nice place to visit with your family.
