Gaststätte Grossmarkthalle Munich
Flyctory.com Pros
Amazing Bavarian "Weißwurst"
Beautiful traditional style architecture
Great place to watch traditional Munich
Flyctory.com Cons
Not too ideal traffic situation
There is no better start of the day for Munich people than a Weißwurst breakfast with a prezel and a beer. The Weißwurst , literally: white sausage, is a very special Bavarian delicacy: the sausage is warmed (but not boiled) and its peel should not be consumed – the locals zuseln the sausage, i.e. they suck out its contents. Surprisingly, there is quite some consensus about where to have the best white sausage in Munich: practically all local guides refer to the Gaststätte Grossmarkthalle right at the Munich central market. My partially Bavarian roots almost felt to force me to check out the place and share my experience with you.
Gaststätte Grossmarkthalle – Location & Times
The restaurant is located right adjacent to the central market. In order to access it, you either walk across the Grossmarkt area or – preferably – from the rear walking along Kochelseestraße. In order to get there, the most likely route is via the U3 and U6 Underground, Implerstraße station. From there, it is roughly a five to seven minute walk to the restaurant. Alternatively, bus 132 (stop Großmarkthalle ) connects the central market with Marienplatz, Isartor, Harras and other Munich central places and travel connections.
The Gaststätte Grossmarkthalle is opening Monday to Friday, 7:00 to 16:00 hrs. On Saturday, the restaurant closes at 13:00 hrs. They are closed on Sundays. If you want to have a seat, especially on a Saturday morning, I highly recommend to reserve a table. Please note that the place is traditional in a many ways: they only accept cash – you can neither pay by credit nor by debit / European bank cards. The restaurant is also having a take-away, which is also quite popular.
Gaststätte Grossmarkthalle – Atmosphere
The atmosphere of the Gaststätte is beautiful Bavarian traditional. As the place is always packed when I have been there, the pictures really give a limited impression of the atmosphere and size – there are three major guest rooms, which are very cozy.
If the weather is somehow allowing it, you need to be very early (or lucky) to get an outside seat at their Biergarten terrace. Due to the wide space, social distancing was no issue during Covid-19 times. Of course, a major issue was rather the reduction of capacity due to wider seat spacing.
Gaststätte Grossmarkthalle – Food
The Gaststätte Grossmarkthalle indeed has quite a nice – there are even some basic vegetarian options. Funnily, their bestsellers are the only items which are not on the printed menu: the Weißwurst and with a Brez’n (pretzel). Finally, there is no reason to order something different – even though I am sure that their alternatives are good as well. Pricing is average, maybe slighly on the high side – but the quality of the white sausage is just awesome.
Gaststätte Grossmarkthalle – My View
There are countless sites (also more central and easier to reach ones) where you can have a pretty good Weißwurst in Munich. If you want to have a first taste, this might be a good start. If you want to have a really good one (and also enjoy watching Munich starting the day), there is no other option than taking the Underground to Implerstraße and walk to the Gaststätte Grossmarkthalle . For me, this trip is just the the perfect morning in the Bavarian capital. Top Pick!
